Branstad visits Thombert on National Manufacturing Day By Alex Olp Newton Daily News Gov. Terry Branstad made a one-hour stop in Newton Friday afternoon to tour Thombert, a manufacturing company that makes forklift tires and wheels. The governor’s visit at 2 p.m. was part of a statewide tour of successful Iowa manufacturing companies in recognition of National Manufacturing Day. Branstad was accompanied by Sen. Chaz Allen (D-Newton) as they went station to station inside the Thombert lab and warehouse to see the process of manufacturing the product. They were led by longtime Thombert President Dick Davidson. “These (tours) are always good because we learn things that you otherwise might have

Apparent murder-suicide investigation underway By Alex Olp Newton Daily News PRAIRIE CITY — Police are continuing an investigation Monday of an apparent murder-suicide that took place in Prairie City early Sunday morning. Identities of the two individuals have not yet been released. According to Prairie City Police Chief Joe Bartello, authorities were called to 405 North Orchard St. at

4:16 a.m. Sunday to investigate a violent disturbance. When officers arrived on scene, two people were found dead — one inside the home and another in the garage. Bartello confirmed that no children were involved, but there were other people inside the residence during the time of the incident. Police have interviewed witnesses at the scene of the crime and said they are cooperating with the investigation.

As for the safety of the Prairie City community, Bartello said it is believed this was not a random act of violence. “We feel this is an isolated event and we have everyone that we’re looking for,” he said. On scene during the investigation were Prairie City and Colfax Police Departments, Jasper County Sheriff ’s Office, Iowa State Patrol and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation Crime Scene Unit. More information is expected to be released Monday, according to Bartello.

not known,” Branstad said. Davidson said Thombert is planning to expand its Brooklyn site as it becomes more vertically integrated and will also begin producing key chemicals, which are used to create much of the products, on site. Thombert creates more than two million wheels per year and is one of Newton’s longtime successful businesses. Allen referred to Thombert as the “quiet giant” of Newton because nobody really knows what’s going on there, but the company’s impact is incredibly large. Branstad agreed. “Well that’s what happens with a lot of companies making component parts because you’re not the final product,” Branstad said. “Your product THOMBERT | 3A

Election Two crowned at Miss Iowa USA pageant Central goes live Monday By Alex Olp Newton Daily News

Newton Daily News The Newton Daily News will launch its Election Central coverage at www.newtondailynews.com on Monday. The newspaper has used this online platform to foster voter engagement for two years. The candidate Q&As will be published in the print editions in the coming weeks. Political coverage includes the following races: U.S. Senate, U.S. Representative District 2, Iowa Senate District 14, Iowa House Districts 28 and 29 and Jasper County Supervisors. U.S. Sen. Charles Grassley did not respond to our invitation to participate. A submission from Dan Kelley, who is running as a third-party candidate for Iowa House District 29, was declined after the newspaper determined it was written in poor taste and is potentially libelous.

West Des Moines resident Kelsey Weier was crowned 2017 Miss Iowa USA, while Carley Arnold of Chariton, earned the Miss Iowa Teen USA crown at the Newton High School Center for Performance Sunday evening. Weier was on the stage with five finalists before the crowning, but said she wasn’t fairly calm because she has been there before — being the 2015 first runner-up — and thought she did very well in nearly all the sections of the competitions. “Part of me was calm just because I put so much time and effort into preparing for this pageant. I wanted it so bad,” Weier said. “But another part was a little worried because I thought I killed it in every other part of the competition, but I was just hoping to seal the deal with the final question, so that’s where I was
