Van Maanen, Skiff honored by NDC By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News Two local businesses were honored Thursday at the Newton Development Corporation’s annual Salute to Business and Industry luncheon at the DMACC Conference Center. Skiff and Mercy Medical Center were recognized as well as Van Mannen Electric, which received the Jim Tyler Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Frank Liebl, executive director of NDC, offered a welcome to the more than 90 business leaders in attendance and Jo Jenkins, chair of the NDC Board introduced the two recipients. “We’re here as a community and we’re here as a partnership and that is what really comes to mind. Without all of your help and all different walks of life we would not be able to grow this great community,” Jenkins said. Skiff became a fully-owned Mercy hospital and a member of Mercy Health Network after almost a year of work and due diligence.

tepping from the hallway of Berg Middle School into the eighth-grade science classroom is like stepping into Harry Potter’s Hogwarts complete with Sorting Hat, Quidditch Broom and House Robes. The unique classroom setting was created by Mike Kremer who is working his magic to help students fall under the spell of science.

“When I was in school studying to be a teacher I was told ‘Not every lesson can be a rock star lesson’ and that always stuck with me,” Kremer said.

Since joining the Mercy Health Network, Skiff has been able to offer additional and expanded services in the areas of heart care and orthopedics. The Jim Tyler Entrepreneur of the Year Award went to Van Maanen Electric. Van Mannen Electric, Inc. is a full service electrical contractor. Founded as a local contractor in 2003 with just a few employees, Van Maanen has become one of Iowa’s leading electrical contractors. Currently, the company employs more than 100 skilled electrical workers, ranging from electrical apprentices to master electricians. Its main focus is primarily on commercial projects with a detailed emphasis on educational facilities. In 2014, it added approximately 15,400 square feet of storage by expanding its current warehouse and with the addition of a new warehouse. The expansion included a new office, large tool room, wire cutting bay and truck bay. AWARDS | 3A
