Home Base Iowa incentives still materializing West Des Moines recently became 21st community approved By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News Iowa community leaders look for all possible grant and incentive programs in efforts to draw in more skilled workers. One of those programs is Home Base Iowa, which is designed to help attract v e t erans w h o h a v e recently completed their active duty and are transitioning into civilian life. Housing, employment and other types of support incentives are put together by communities around the state to earn a Home Base Iowa designation. West Des Moines was recently announced as the 21st community to earn the designation. Jasper County Veterans Affairs Director Chris Chartier said he’s looking forward to hopefully putting together a unique package in the near future that will not only earn an HBI designation, but also set the county apart from other

Janco in Sully opens new facility By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News Gov. Terry Branstad was on hand for a ribbon cutting at the new Janco Industries manufacturing facility in Sully on Monday. The 70,000-square foot building at 600 W. Second Ave. brings the two divisions of the business under the same roof for the first time. “I want to say congratulations to Joel and Deann and your family for the decision you have made, and I am proud to be here and witness this 70,000-square foot manufacturing expansion in Sully, Iowa,” Branstad said. Joel Jansen and his wife, Deann, are owners of Janco, a company that specializes in metal fabrication. The business was originally founded by Jansen’s father, Ron, in 1993, who had also owned and operated Star Auto Company, a truck repair and equipment shop.
“Janco was started in 1993 by my father. We started out recovering husking rolls for the seed corn industry. About four years later, we got into the metal fab business. In 2000, my dad retried, and we purchased the company from him,” Jansen said. From 2000 to 2010 the company employed about 15 people. In August 2010, Handy Industries, which is known for making high quality motorcycle lifts, truck tailgates and shop accessories, closed its doors and Janco purchased the company. “From 2010 on, we ran our powder coating, our assembly and our sales staff in Marshalltown and our metal fabrication was in Sully,” Jansen said. The Jansens had plans to eventually bring the team from the Marshalltown facility to a new, 50,000-square foot location in Sully, but when a fire ravaged the original building in January 2014,
Semis collide on I-80; one to hospital By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News An incident involving a semi backed up traffic on Interstate 80 on Monday afternoon. According the Jasper County Sheriff ’s Office, calls began coming in shortly after 1 p.m. about a collision involving two semis in the westbound lanes close to the 173 mile marker, near the Kellogg exit for Iowa Highway 224. A call came in at about 1:19 p.m. about one of the semis driving in reverse on the interstate, with the driver apparently having some type of medical emergency. Deputies arrived about six minutes later, and discovered two semis had been involved in an accident near the 175 mile marker, stopping westbound traffic in that area. Motorists were attempting to assist one of the semi drivers, who deputies found to be unresponsive. He was re-
moved from the cab, and a deputies were able to get the semi out of the traveled portion of the interstate to allow traffic to begin flowing again. The driver was identified as Wade Point, 46, of Davenport. He was treated at the scene by Newton Fire EMS personnel and taken to a local medical facility for treatment. Authorities said he is suspected of being under the influence of controlled substances. Sheriff John Halferty said charges are possible, but the investigation is ongoing. The investigation shows Point was driving and either backed or rolled into the other semi. No other injuries occurred. Halferty said he thanks the motorists who assisted at the scene, along with Iowa DOT Motor Vehicle Enforcement officers. Contact Jason W. plans began to change. Instead of operating out of multiple facilities in Sully, the Jansens decided to construct a brand-new facility a few blocks south of the fire damaged building. “On Jan. 30, 2014, we had a massive fire in Sully, but prior to that fire we had building plans going on to get the Marshalltown facility to Sully. We were still going to utilize that building in Sully. When we had the fire we decided to add an additional 90 feet to the new building,” Jansen said. Groundbreaking for the new facility started in May of last year but because of a rainy summer, the process was delayed. “The process went very well — there were hardly any issues,” Jansen said. “The only setback was Mother Nature — that was nothing we could control.” JANCO | 3A

NCSD board discusses professional development days By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News Newton Community School District principals probably weren’t planning on discussing the value of its professional-development arrangement at Monday night’s board of education meeting, but a question from a board member brought out an interesting dialogue. After outlining what went on during Monday’s professional development day, and what will go on during the other PD days this year, the principals took questions from the board. Board vice president Travis Padget asked to hear the pros and cons of using the last Monday of each month for a full PD day, compared with the previous format of having early-dismissal Wednesdays.
Jason W. Brooks/Daily News Jasper County Conservation naturalists Greg Oldsen and Katie Cantu made a presentation to the Newton Community School District board of education Monday night about field trips that involve Newton-area students. The board’s main discussion of the meeting was about professional development days, and the plan for the rest of the school year.
“A year ago (at the start of the 2014-15 school year), we changed the calendar to have longer durations, compared to having a Wednesday every week,” Padget said. “So, are we seeing what we were looking for when we changed that?”
Berg Middle School Principal Lisa Sharp said her staff doesn’t have any kind of common collaboration time in the regular schedule now, so there are no common times for, say, all of the math or science teachers at BMS to meet within the school
day. Woodrow Wilson Elementary School Principal Todd Schuster said his school’s schedule allows for common collaboration time, so he likes the one-day-permonth PD format. SCHOOL | 3A

Iowa locations. Chartier didn’t want to mention any specific elements of the Jasper County plan or any names or businesses, as the county’s incentive package is still in the works. However, he did say it’s important to maximize resources and economic elements that are unique to Jasper County, so the package has attributes that make it stand out on a list of communities. “Those involved with t h e Home base Iowa initiative locally are looking into the most efficient incentives that can be offered to match our communities’ intent,” Chartier said. One aspect that might be affecting the speed of each community earning an HBI designation is a change in leadership. Kathy Anderson, the program manager for Home Base Iowa, recently left to take over as vice president of the Member Development and Programs at Iowa Association of Business and Industry.
