Breckenridge challenging Kelley for Iowa House nomination NPD lieutenant said he wants to build partnerships By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News In 2010, a lieutenant with the Newton Police Department ran against Dan Kelley for the Democratic nomination for an Iowa legislative seat. In 2016, it appears that matchup is going to happen again. Lt. Wes Breckenridge is slated to announce his candidacy for the District 29 Iowa House seat held by Rep. Dan Kelley since 2010. Breckenridge was narrowly defeated by Kelley in a special 2010 Democratic primary. Breckenridge made his announcement at P.J.’s Deli in

Newton on Saturday morning to a gathering of a few dozen supporters. He said serving the public has been a passion of his for the past 22 years throughKelley out his career with NPD. “The main thing I’d like to see is for all leaders to work together,” Breckenridge told the Newton Daily News in an interview Friday afternoon. “Not only within our parties, but across the aisle, as well. I want to run a positive campaign that’s about the issues and about building relationships. I want to help build partnerships.” Breckenridge, 47, was recently considered as one of four finalists for the NPD chief position that went to Rob

As the leaves begin to fall, we are once again reminded that the seasons are changing and cold weather will be upon us once again. That means winter’s companion — the flu — will also be making its rounds through schools, day cares and businesses, sooner that you might think. “Influenza circulates year-round, but influenza spread typically picks up and remains active between October and May,” said Iowa Department of Health Medical Director Dr. Patricia Quinlisk. “The single best way to protect against the flu is to get vaccinated each year.

Being vaccinated now will ensure protection before the flu season starts in October; it’s not too early to get your shot.” The seasonal flu vaccine protects against the influenza viruses research indicates will be most common during the upcoming season. Traditional flu vaccines (called “trivalent” vaccines) are made to protect against three flu viruses: influenza A (H1N1) virus, influenza A (H3N2) virus and an influenza B virus. “Quadrivalent” vaccines, which protect against the same three viruses as the trivalent vaccine and a second B virus are also available. Jason W. Brooks/Daily News Bernie Sanders spoke at a well-attended event at Newton High School Center for Performance on Saturday night. Among other items, the 2016 Democratic presidential hopeful discussed the loss of American industrial jobs, and focused a great deal of his time on health care before taking a handful of questions from the audience.

Norm Van Klompenburg/Special to Daily News Stargazers were treated to a rare astronomical phenomenon Sunday when a total lunar eclipse combined with a so-called supermoon. The moon is shown here in Newton at 9:47 p.m. at about mid-eclipse. It was the first time the events have made a twin appearance since 1982, and they won’t again until 2033.

Burdess; both finalists took turns serving as “acting chief ” over the summer. Breckenridge wouldn’t say if the selection influenced his decision to make another legislative run, but he did say he has a strong yearning to do more in both his law enforcement and elected-office pursuits. “NPD gave me the training to possibly become chief, and helping keep the citizens of Newton safe is still a passion of mine,” he said. “I will continue to give the department a 110 percent commitment when I’m on duty. This race gives me the opportunity to serve the community in a larger capacity.” The regular legislative session typically runs from January through May. State Sen. Steve Sodders (D-State Center) is an example of a state

U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders says the concept of redistributing wealth isn’t a novel one. However, in his onehour talk Saturday night to an enthusiastic, large crowd at the Newton High School’s Center for Performance, the 2016 Democratic presidential hopeful said the movement of money isn’t going where it’s needed. “Republicans get nervous when you talk about

redistributing wealth,” Sanders said. “They get scared, and start shaking. But they’ve been redistributing it for years — it’s just been going in the wrong direction.” Sanders discussed the loss of American industrial jobs, and focused a great deal of his time on health care before taking a handful of questions from the audience during his first visit to Newton since announcing his candidacy. The Democratic frontrunner — in some polls — spoke to a mostly-filled auditorium. Three speakers, including Craig Armstrong of the Newton Convention and Visitors Bureau, spoke briefly before Sanders took the stage.
