Second juvenile charged in Newton burglaries By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News A second juvenile accused of burglarizing three Newton homes has been located and charged. Newton Police arrested the 16-year-old after locating him at approximately 8 p.m. Thursday in the 1800 block of First Street North. He is charged with three counts of third-degree burglary for burglaries that occurred last week on the west side of Newton. The police department had responded to three daytime burglaries in which items such as electric guitars, jewelry, game systems and cash were reported stolen from the residences. During the burglaries, the two juveniles were seen casing one of the homes and removing a

screen from a window. After the burglaries occurred, they were also seen walking away from the homes, carrying the stolen items reported stolen, according to the NPD. A search warrant was served at a home in the 800 block on South Second Avenue East and part of the stolen property was found at that time. A 17-year-old male juvenile was charged Tuesday in connection to the burglaries after additional property was found at his home. The 16-year-old juvenile was taken to the Central Iowa Juvenile Detention Center in Eldora on a previously issued juvenile detention order. Contact Jamee A. Newton wins All-Star Community award Newton Daily News The Iowa League of Cities recognized the City of Newton as the 2015 People’s All-Star Community at the League’s Annual Conference & Exhibit, which was held in Cedar Rapids from this week. In August, the League named Elkader, Sheldon and Waterloo as All-Star Communities after a panel of judges evaluated applications based on innovative efforts in areas such as urban renewal, development, preservation, collaborative efforts or quality of life improvements. Beginning Aug. 24, a second round of judging began on Facebook to determine the winner of the People’s All-Star Community. Newton was among 10 communities to compete in the head-to-head, bracket-style competition. ALL-STAR | 3A

Football game set for 7:30 p.m. Friday vs. Gilbert By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News A homecoming week filled with Dr. Seuss quotes and memories that will last a lifetime were what Newton High School students generated this week. NHS students, along with other students in town, are celebrating homecoming week, with the 2015-16 theme being a play on a Dr. Seuss book title, “Oh, The Places You’ll Go .... at NHS.” Thursday was probably the most full day of the week in terms of community involvement, with the coronation, a Berg Middle School pep rally, as well as

the traditional parade and courthouse pep rally all being held. A pep rally was slated for Friday morning. The Cardinal football team will be aiming for its first win of the 2015 season when it hosts 3-1 Gilbert at 7:30 p.m. Friday at H.A. Lynn Stadium. The homecoming dance is set for 8:45 p.m. Saturday in the school’s lower gym. Newton High senior Kate Wyre was crowned homecoming queen at Thursday’s late-morning coronation ceremony in the NHS upper gym. The crown was placed on her head by homecoming king and fellow senior Chet Adams, who had received

his crown moments earlier. All 20 queen and king homecoming candidates members were introduced at the coronation Thursday, with Dr. Seuss quotes mixed in. In addition to Wyre and Adams, the court includes Elise Axtell, Adrienne Berman, Grace Coen, Emily Fitzgerald, Frances Lucas, Taylor Moon, Jaci Reeves, Hannah Rhoads, Leela Spencer, Joseph Banfield, Jacob Bennett, Derek Damman, Duncan Lee, Dalton Nevels, Grant Nook, Cole Peters, Bryce Tish and Benton Vest. Last year’s homecoming king, Chris Thorpe, wasn’t able to make it back from college in Ohio to

attend the coronation, but 2014-15 queen McKenna Heisdorffer, a University of Northern Iowa freshman, was a participant in Thursday’s ceremony. The court traveled to the middle school, along with cheerleaders, the Cardinal Regiment band and the Pacesetters dancers for an afternoon pep rally. Weather cooperated for the parade and pep rally, with no rain despite threatening skies. The NHS seniors’ “Lorax” float took first place in awards given out after the parade. Contact Jason W. Newton Fall Fest to conclude farmers’ market season By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News

Alex Olp/Daily News Baxter Fire Department was the first responder to a house fire which resulted in no injuries north of Mingo Thursday morning. According to Baxter Fire Chief Dan Ritter, the homeowners called 911 at 10 a.m. after hearing electrical pops from their attic.

As a way to highlight the final Newton Farmers’ Market of 2015, Newton Fall Fest is planned with vendors, kid’s activities, giveaways, music and more. Newton Main Street along with the Jasper County Farm Bureau will be hosting the free celebration from 4 to

7 p.m. Tuesday on the Newton square. “Part of what we do is to provide education about the diversity of agriculture while enriching our communities. This is one of the primary reasons we approached Newton Main Street about this project,” said Trish Hafkey, of the Jasper County Farm Bureau. “It was brought to our attention that Newton

previously held a widely popular ‘Farm to City’ night. Based off this initial concept, we wanted to work with the community to provide an opportunity for families to interact with local agriculturists, visit the local farmers’ market, have interactive and fun children’s activities and just enjoy downtown Newton.” FALL FEST | 3A

Home lost, no injuries in Mingo fire By Alex Olp Newton Daily News No injuries were reported in the aftermath of a Thursday morning house fire near Mingo, but fire crews said the one-story unit was a total loss.

Loud pops were reported at the rural Jasper County home at 8986 W. 108th St. N. just before 10 a.m. by the homeowners. Initial reports that an explosion started the fire were unfounded. Baxter Fire Chief

Dan Ritter said on scene he believes the fire was caused by faulty electrical wiring and originated in the attic. It took fire crews from five area departments 2.5 hours to get the blaze under FIRE | 3A

Jamee A. Pierson/Daily News To celebrate a productive year at the Newton Farmers’ Market, Fall Fest is planned for the final market Tuesday. The new event is highlighted by the Hawkeye Pedal Pull Contest and Randy Burk and the Prisoners taking the stage at 5:30 p.m.
