Hy-Vee’s Aisles Online delivers groceries with a click of a mouse By Savannah Eadens Newton Daily News Newton Hy-Vee’s new Aisles Online program has every department in the grocery store involved in the process of bringing customer convenience to another level. Using Aisles Online, customers are able to make their entire grocery order online. All orders are received at the store by Linda Deutsch, Aisles Online and Gar-
den Center manager. Deutsch uses a hand-held computer to serve as a personal shopper of sorts, walking around Hy-Vee every day, scanning and completing orders made online. The orders are then stored in bins in the stockrooms and coolers, to keep the food fresh. Customers have the option to pick up their order, or have it delivered to their house. “It’s really such a time-saving process to have an online store,”
By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News After being part of the discussion for the past several months as an aspect of the Crime-Free Multi-Housing program, the city council failed to move forward on a resolution to help fund the program, not getting support to bring it to a motion at its Monday meeting. The proposed $10 per permit increase would have generated approximately $20,000 to cover the increase of the administrative costs to support the program. Strong opposition was expressed by area landlords
for the increase in fees at several council meetings and at the two workshops about the program. Many discussed how difficult it would be to pass on the increase and the hardship it would put on already struggling tenants. With the failure of the resolution, the city will now have to find other resources to fund the new program which is set to start in October. The council did choose to suspend the rules and waive the second and third readings for two ordinance changes. The first was agreement with the Jasper County Animal Rescue League to sell city animal licenses and not allow an animal to be retrieved until the license and rabies vaccinations have been administered and purchased. Deutsch said. “It’s an ideal system for the busy mom or even the dad who doesn’t like shopping.” Deutsch said that although the program is new, having just started Aug. 31, business is picking up quickly. “I think when the word gets out about what a convenience and time-saver it is, business will really explode,” Deutsch said.
As Vice President Joe Biden continues to give mixed signals about whether he’ll run for president in 2016, s u p port for a Draft Biden organiBishop zation continues to mount. Jasper County Treasurer Doug Bishop on Tuesday formally announced he is a key supporter of Draft Biden Iowa. He joins State Sen. Chaz Allen (D-Newton) and a list of about 17 other current or former state or county Democrat office holders from around Iowa. Bishop is also the board president of the Jasper County Economic Development Corporation. He served on the City of Baxter’s
city council for six years and served as mayor there for four years, but he is probably best known in Jasper County as an advocate for veterans. He serves as the chair of the Jasper County Freedom Flight Committee. “Our VA system is in dire need of attention,” Bishop said in a statement. “I believe that Vice President Biden is the best choice as our Democratic candidate to ensure our nation’s veterans are adequately cared for — not only on the battlefield, but (also) in their home county, once they finish their tour of duty.” Allen said he’s been told Biden will likely make an announcement in the first week of October. Draft Biden Iowa State Director Ellen Goodmann Miller called Bishop a strong addition to a growing coalition.

AP Photo Pope Francis looks out from the Hill of the Cross in Holguin, Cuba, Monday. Francis traveled to Cuba’s fourth-largest city, Holguin, to celebrate a Mass at the Plaza of the Revolution, and visit the pilgrimage site, before heading to Santiago de Cuba.
As only the fourth pope to visit the United States, Pope Francis’ visit has Catholics across the country and those in Newton excited about the impact he’ll make. The pope will make stops in Washington, D.C., New York City and Philadelphia during his five day trip beginning Tuesday. Deacon Dan Goetz of Sacred Heart Catholic Church said that

his words to Congress. It doesn’t matter who we are, where we worship or if we don’t — Pope Francis brings to the United States a message for all of us,” Goetz said. “My hope is that whether we are at the White House, seated in Congress, attending events in New York and Philadelphia or watching him on our computer or TV we all take that message to heart.” POPE | 8A

even before being elected pope, the then Arch Bishop of Buenos Aires, Jorge Mario Bergolio, touched lives and influenced those who were poor, rich, powerful, voiceless, strong and weak. As Pope Francis he continues to do that. “I have no doubt that his visit to New York City, Philadelphia, the White House and his address to Congress will influence and touch people in that same way. I am especially anticipating
