Brock recovering after grain bin fall By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News There are no staircases around the grain bin on Joe Brock’s farm. However, after Thursday’s accident, the Jasper County super visor said that arrangeBrock m e n t c o u l d change. “I’ll definitely get a couple of stairways on that bin soon,” Brock said Sunday, reflecting on a fall from a height of about 20 feet from the ladder of his grain bin Thursday morning. The fall at his farm, located along South 68th Avenue West, south of Newton, didn’t lead to any serious injuries, aside from what he called “soft tissue damage.” The fall did seem to aggravate some existing medical issues, and he was transported to Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines. “I’m on the mend,” Brock said. “I don’t have any broken bones — it just made things worse with the problems I already had.” Brock, 58, said he already had a torn meniscus in both knees, and planned to have the more recent of the two injuries surgically treated after this year’s harvest. Sanders to host town hall meeting at Newton High School Public event to be held Saturday night By Kate Malott Newton Daily News Presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders will return to Iowa with a special stop in Newton Saturday night. Sanders will host a Jasper County town hall meeting at 7 p.m. Saturday at Newton High School, 800 E. Fourth St. S. — the same night as the NHS Homecoming dance. The town hall style meeting will take place in the high school auditorium where Sanders will discuss current issues with local residents.

Doors open at 6 p.m. Jasper County Democrats Chair Taylor Van De Krol will be meeting with the Sanders campaign Tuesday, but is unsure if all event details will be decided by that date. “This is a great opportunity for anyone. Whether you’re a Democrat, Republican or independent, I encourage everyone to attend these events. Iowa plays a vital role in the presidential election, and Iowans need to look at all candidates and issues closely to make an educated decision on Feb. 1.” Van De Krol said. Sanders is the third Democratic

presidential candidate to come to Jasper County this caucus season. He will also appear in Fort Dodge and Mason City on Sunday. The Newton High School Homecoming dance is scheduled from 8:45 to 11:45 p.m. in the lower gym of the high school, while Sanders will appear in the Center for Performing Arts. also said he’s had four discs in his back that have caused him problems since he was a teenager. Brock said he was at his farm alone Thursday morning, and saw a break in the weather. He needed to get an extension cord to the top of the bin, and the ladder on his bin is a traditional straightup ladder with no protective cover. He wasn’t able to grip the ladder firmly with both hands as he carried the cord. “I guess the lesson learned is not try to carry something while climbing a ladder,” Brock said. Brock said he landed on both his tailbone and his lower back. He said the fall could have been much worse, as he grazed an auger that could have injured him severely, had he landed directly on it. The two-term supervisor, who was re-elected to the three-member board last year, said he doesn’t normally carry his phone with him out on the farm, but he was expecting a call. He was able to call 911 at 10:24 a.m., reporting back pain and trouble breathing, and the dispatcher kept him on the line until help arrived. Brock said the response time from both the Jasper County Sheriff ’s Office and the Prairie City Fire Department ambulance seemed very short. BROCK | 3A

Kate Malott/Daily News Local residents participate in the 11th annual Off the Beaten Path Trail Race Saturday morning at Jacob Krumm Nature Preserve in eastern Jasper County. 6K participants started the race at 9 a.m. and a 3K race began at 9:15 a.m. Proceeds from the trail race will serve to benefit the natural resources and sustainability of Jasper County through nonprofit Jasper Conservation Connection. Despite the wet conditions, around 70 people had registered for the event, Jasper County Conservation Board Director Keri Van Zante said. See more photos inside on page 8A.

When Carrie Keasling saw the remnants of an iron she had been using before her home caught on fire Sept. 13, she had a sobering realization. “That’s when it hit me,” Keasling said. “This was all my fault.”
