Stop signs planned near Aurora Heights By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News Concerns over student safety near Aurora Heights Elementary led the Newton City Council to add additional stop signs at several street crossings. The council waived the second and third reading of an ordinance to add the signs, adopting it during its first reading. Stop signs will be added on East 23rd Street South at South Third Avenue East for north and southbound traffic, on East 22nd Street South for eastbound traffic and at East 23rd Street and South Fifth Avenue East.

Currently, there are stop signs on East 23rd Street South for east and w e s t bound Issac traffic. T h e neighborhood and intersections were analyzed by city staff and based on the school traffic, student pedestrian traffic and the neighborhood dynamics, the Traffic Safety Committee recommended adding the signage. Because of the reconfiguration plan in the school district, the

city found that a larger number of young children were walking from the north, requiring them to cross the busy intersections. “On behalf of Newton schools I want to thank you for your consideration of adding a stop sign on South Third Avenue and East 23rd Street,” Newton Community School District Business Manager Gayle Issac said. “We want to thank you for putting the students’ safety at the forefront.” Issac said the school district recently installed crossing guards at the SIGNS | 3A

A high speed chase through Newton Thursday night ended with the driver eluding officers by driving into a bean field. An investigation is ongoing after the vehicle, a black Nissan Pathfinder, was located Friday morning in the 6000 block of North 27th Avenue East. At approximately 6:50 p.m. officers with the Newton Police Department attempted to

conduct a traffic stop for a registration violation. The vehicle was at the intersection of First Avenue and East 14th Street when the officer began pursuit with his lights on. The driver attempted to elude the officer by speeding and ignoring stop signs in northeast Newton, according to police. The driver then headed north on Highway T12, eventually entering a bean field near East 60th Street and North 27th Avenue. Substantial damage was done to the crops after the driver drove all over the field. The officers lost sight of the vehicle after refusing to pursue through the field. Officers are continuing to investigate the incident and charges are pending.
