Bond committee assigned to 911 Commission give input on Berg redesign looks to get new radio console

By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News Jasper County Sheriff John Halferty presented a plan to county supervisors Tuesday to replace dispatch consoles used by 911 operators. The county’s involvement with the project comes as a type of co-signer for the 911 Commission. “We have a project where the 911 Commission voted unanimously to replace our dispatch consoles and equipment,” he said. Halferty, who is also the secretary of the 911 Commission, said the commission can pay for

the system without any funds from the county. A second financial backer has been sought by Motorola, the company from which the commission is purchasing $292,000 worth of equipment. “The commission can pay for this, in fact, the commission received a $100,000 grant which will be used as a down payment on the new system,” Halferty said. “The finance people at Motorola felt because they are a commission, they wanted a type of co-signer.” RADIO | 3A

Jason W. Brooks/Daily News Dave Briden of FRK Design in Des Moines spoke before the Newton Community School District board of education Monday. A designer will meet with a group of 18 to 25 Newton-area residents in the months leading up to a Feb. 2 bond election in order to allow the community to have input into designing a rebuild of the Berg Complex.

Committee will have members from community, school district By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News While no names were made public at Monday’s Newton Community School District board of education regarding an advisory committee, the process that put that committee in place is still moving forward. The board of education, with

the aid of school administrators, is putting together a bond committee to help advise in the design process of rebuilding the Berg Complex. The board voted earlier this year to pursue a build of an all-new building on the Berg site, in a way that won’t displace students at the existing complex. The general-obligation bond should go to the voters Feb. 2 and the committee is being allowed to advise the architect on what features to include in the grades 5-8 complex. Monday, Superintendent Bob Callaghan distributed a list of about 15 names to the board of community members that have confirmed interest in being on the

bond advisory committee, along with five “maybes.” The names were not shared with the public, as the list hasn’t been solidified, and there will also be district staff members added to the committee. Callaghan said he plans to meet this week with City of Newton leaders to determine if there are city officials or other employers who would be useful to the cause. Board member Donna Cook pointed out there was a 12-3 gender ratio among the 15 confirmed community members, which would go to 17-3 if all the “maybes” end up on the committee. BERG | 3A
