Thousands converge on courthouse lawn for annual event By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News Cheers went up from a tent on the Jasper County Courthouse lawn when an announcement was made Thursday evening. The winning team of Thanks With Franks “Top Dog” award as most popular hot dog concoction — as voted by the sampling public — was from Park Centre. The staff of Park Centre successfully defended its title as having the best hot dog at an event designed to help local businesses show appreciation to customers. The 12th annual event, hosted by the Young Professionals of Jasper County, brought approximately 2,000 people to the courthouse square, and 10,000 hot dogs were given away. Other booths and events were set up as a form of community outreach. About 40 area businesses and organizations came up with common and uncommon hot dog toppings, with the hot dogs and buns supplied to them.
Four downtown businesses were approved Tuesday for micro grants through the Downtown Micro Grant program. The Newton City Council approved The Farmer’s Wife, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Gregory J. Bruns and Randy and Marilyn Terlouw for grants to make improvements to their properties ranging from new signage, painting and window replacement. “The establishment
“I thought this went really successfully,” said Sveta Miller, president of the Young Professionals of Jasper County. “The weather really could not have been better, and people from HyVee and so many other businesses and groups helped out to make things go well.”
The Young Professionals have put on the business appreciation and charity event since 2005, and Park Centre’s unique concoction was merely the latest in series of hot dog innovations that has lasted more than a decade. FRANKS | 3A

The building at 124 N. Second Ave. W., which holds The Farmer’s Wife, is a contributing structure to the downtown historic district because of its level of retained historic integrity related specifically to the modernization movement of the mid-20th century, which drastically altered the building’s facade, Knabel said. The proposed project improves the aesthetic of the building and is considered a step in the right direction. GRANTS | 3A

Light agenda on tap Monday meeting is final before bond vote By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News Another light agenda has been released for a Newton Community School District Board of Education regular meeting. Monday’s meeting, set for 6:30 p.m. at the EJH Beard Administration Center, will be the board’s final meeting before Tuesday’s bond election. Voters will be able to decide if a $26.9 million bond should pass, with voting taking place from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Jasper County Community Center. The bond requires 60 percent ap-
proval to pass. The agenda for the board’s Aug. 22 meeting was light, and the agenda for Monday’s meeting has even fewer items on it. There appear to be no major action items involving purchases of new Callaghan products or services. The board will consideration electing a delegate assembly representative to attend the Iowa Association of School Boards’ annual convention in November. WHERE IT’S AT 75 CENTS
If a picture is worth a thousand words, a thousand toothbrushes should hopefully be worth at least a heightened awareness among Jasper County youth about the importance of brushing. That’s the hope Jasper County Public Health Coordinator Lisa Damman has for a new set of materials supplied by Delta Dental. Damman displayed some of the 1,000 toothbrushes — of various sizes — at Thursday’s monthly Jasper County Board of Health meeting, as well as books and other materials that could be used for educating young people about dental health “There are curriculums to follow for kindergarten through second grade, and one for third through fifth grade,” Damman said.
“’Smart Smiles’ is the name of the program. There are books, an audio CD, a DVD and a model ‘mouth’ to use for demonstration.” The Delta program was one of two recent programs discussed Thursday in which the Jasper County Health Department has recently obtained resources. The other is the Love Our Kid Injury Prevention Grant from the Iowa Department of Public Health’s Emergency Services Division, which will provide the JCHD with about $2,000 to cover staffing and supplies to help child injuries. The areas of prevention focus are suffocation, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, shaken baby, car seats, drowning and burns. Another grant discussed at the meeting was funding sought in an effort to seek recognition from the Public Health Accreditation Board. JCHD Director Becky Pryor said she hasn’t received notice yet
