NCSD selects legislative priorities By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News

Jason W. Brooks/Daily News The Dark Knight, of the Iowa League of Heroes, poses with Leisa Zylstra of Skiff Medical Center at Wednesday’s annual United Way of Jasper County kickoff meeting. This year’s fundraising theme for UWJC is “Be Heroic, Live United.”

United Way kicks off 2016-17 campaign

A few days before the Iowa Assembly’s 2016 session began, the Newton Community School District Board of Education was briefed on K-12 topics that were likely to be discussed in the Legislature. As with most sessions, public educators got some of the things they sought from the Legislature, but not nearly all. The Iowa Association of School Boards puts together a list of legislative priorities each year. At a recent meeting, the NCSD board picked out four of the IASB’s 33 resolutions for 2017 that are especially important to Newton. The board chose, by consensus, IASB resolutions numbered 2, 21, 27 and 28. Those four resolutions address preserving and extending the statewide penny sales tax for school infrastructure, standards and accountability, supplemental state aid and opposition to unfunded mandates. The current penny-tax provision is set to “sunset” in 2029. A proposal unveiled by Gov. Terry Branstad at the start of last year’s session calls for only the first $10 million of new penny-tax revenue to go to schools each year, with the rest going toward water quality programs, in exchange for extending the sunset to the year 2049. Theme is ‘Be Heroic, Live United’ By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News Before United Way of Jasper County Executive Director Jessica Lowe handed out donation collection materials at Wednesday’s annual campaign kickoff luncheon, it was important everyone in the room take an oath. Lowe was assisted in leading about 25 UWJC board members, partner agency representatives and campaign coordinators in taking the oath with the best possible individual — Batman. A member of the Iowa League of Heroes, dressed as “The Dark Knight,” helped Lowe extol the United Way’s causes, which range from

help with health or food security needs to assistance with home heating costs. And the oath, in step with Wednesday’s lighthearted meeting, ended with “I solemnly swear that if I win the Powerball, I’ll donate half Lowe of my winnings to the United Way of Jasper County.” There were other humorous moments as Lowe explained the more serious needs of Jasper County residents, of whom 33 percent receive at least one service funded through the United Way. The purpose of Wednesday’s luncheon was to help

introduce board members and representatives of partner agencies to each other and to hand out packets with information on the annual campaign. The goal for the 2016 campaign was $330,000, and UWJC nearly met its goal, garnering $305,000. The $330,000 mark will be the goal again for 2017. “I really do appreciate everyone’s help,” Lowe told everyone at the luncheon. “Remember, almost all of our donations stay local — we send 1 cent to United Way Worldwode, and the rest goes right back to agencies and organizations here in Jasper County.” UNITED | 3A

Digging into the details

Jason W. Brooks/Daily News Carolyn Lappin of Crisis Intervention Services listens to a student at her booth Wednesday at Newton DMACC. DMACC hosted an event called “Dig into DMACC,” serving pizza and inviting local organizations and agencies to explain to students some of the clubs and resources available in Jasper County.
