Elderly Colfax woman found in Missouri By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News A 76-year-old Colfax woman has been found after a lengthy search reaching into bordering states. Karen Schlosser was found in Rockport, Mo. at 10:30 p.m. Thursday after she was last seen that morning in Sully.

Schlosser

Schlosser was last seen at 9:30 a.m. driving a white Dodge pickup. She suffers from Aphasia, which may have caused difficulty in

her communicating with people she came into contact with. She also did not have a cellphone with her. The Jasper County Sheriff ’s Office first requested the public’s assistance in locating her through their Facebook page at about 4 p.m. The Iowa State Patrol joined in the search with aircraft and

first responders were searching on ground. At approximately 8 p.m. the search expanded to neighboring states. Local citizens in Rockport assisted Schlosser in calling her family and local law enforcement officers made contact with her and reunited her with her family. She was reported to be in good

Jason W. Brooks/Daily News Twenty-three-month-old Raylynn Mecum, daughter of Seth Good, enjoys a hot dog in the arms of her grandfather, Alan Good, at Thursday’s Thanks With Franks event. The event, put on by the Young Professionals of Jasper County, has been a chance for the business appreciation and charity fundraising since 2005.

Park Centre takes home ‘biggest wiener’ award By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News Cream cheese probably wouldn’t make it onto Family Feud if 100 people were surveyed about common hot-dog toppings. However, that’s one of the ingredients the team from Park Centre retirement community used in its hot dogs at Thursday’s Thanks With Franks event in the Jasper County Courthouse square. Park Centre won the “biggest wiener” trophy after its hot-dog toppings were voted as the fan favorites on write-in votes by the public who attended. The Young Professionals of

Jasper County have put on the business appreciation and charity event since 2005, and Park Centre’s unique concoction was merely the latest in series of hotdog innovations that has lasted a decade. In addition to cream cheese, Park Centre’s allotment of 200 hot dogs also featured bacon, scrambled eggs, cheddar cheese and hash browns. Accepting the trophy from YPJC President Danielle Rogers were Jennifer Flake, Jourdan Flake and Emily Baker of Park Centre. Proceeds from the event, which featured 43 booth entries this year, go to charity. Berg

Middle School students, raising funds for an upcoming trip to Washington, D.C., and the Red Pride Club manned the drinks booth, which sold soda and water for $1 each. Rogers said she was pleased with the turnout, especially considering it was an extremely warm day. Moving the start time of the event back from 5 p.m. to p.m. allowed more area residents to attend, she said. “It also allowed businesses longer to get set up,” Rogers said. “We were hoping the heat wouldn’t keep people away. It looks like we had a great turnout.” FRANKS | 3A

Newton home. Hamell pleaded not guilty to domestic abuse assault and waived his right to a speedy trial. Court records show he is being represented by F. Montgomery Brown, of West Des Moines. Due to a potential conflict of interest, the Jasper County Attorney’s Office has turned the case over to the Iowa Attorney General’s Office for prosecution. According to court records, Hamell and the victim were in a physical fight in which Hamell slammed a door on her arm while she HAMMELL | 3A

Construction begins on pocket park By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News Construction has started on the pedestrian path and pocket park located north of the alley linking downt o w n with the Newton Public L i b r a r y. Forms Bassman for the path have been put in place and dirt work has been started in the space. “The city covered the

cost of the paving, since they were able to lump the relatively small job in with a larger contract,” Newton Main Street Executive Director Andrew Bassman said. The sidewalk portion was part of a larger sidewalk package that was approved in the city’s annual budget on March 2. After the sidewalk is installed, additional items such as plants and trees will be put into place. Amenities, including lighting and benches, will follow PARK | 7A

Hometown Pride program outlines Newton-specific goals Five-year program funded by Keep Iowa Beautiful By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News If you’ve never been to Newton’s Thirty Acre Park, you probably know someone else who hasn’t been there, either. The park might be considered one of many of Jasper County’s under-utilized places, and a recently formed coa-

lition is taking on the task of getting more out of certain areas in seven county communities and helping beautify selected spots. The Hometown Pride program is a sort of coalition of community civic planners, and it’s a statewide program funded by Keep Iowa Beautiful, and the program started to pick up steam in terms of articulating places and projects to be addressed in the five-year program. Jeff Davidson was

brought in after a long career in Iowa City to be the Jasper County “coach” for Hometown Pride. It was important to hire a coach that had no connections to the area, yet also a person with a background in grant writing, locating sources of funding and understanding how urban planning works. “Newton is not only the biggest city in the county, and it’s a new REWARDS | 3A

Jason W. Brooks/Daily News Newton’s Thirty Acre Park is one of the Jasper County’s Hometown Pride program areas of interest. The Newton park, along with several other parks, roadways and other spaces, are targets for their five-year program, which got under way late last year.
