Santorum talks jobs, health care, higher ed in Newton Republican presidential candidate held round-table discussion at NDC By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News “The winner of any presidential election is always the best communicator,” former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum said during a round-table discussion on Monday in Newton. Santorum led a talk about economic development at the Newton Development Corporation’s offices, locat-

ed in the Des Moines Area Community College Newton Campus building. His appearance made Jasper the 97th county he’s visited during his campaign as part of his attempt to reach all 99 Iowa counties in his quest for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination. Santorum, a former Congressman from Pennsylvania and the winner of the 2012 Iowa

Republican caucus, finished second in delegates to eventual nominee, even though he dropped out of the race in April of that year. He hasn’t drawn high numbers in the polls so far in 2015, but he said it’s a long march to the Feb. 1 caucus, and many twists and turns can still be ahead. Jamee A. Pierson/Daily News Over the past decade, the Newton Municipal Airport has been a vital business tool for the City of Newton as well as for companies looking to potentially expand their businesses into the town. From the Iowa Speedway to corporations that helped fill the Maytag void, many used the airport as a third exit to the city and continue to use it to conduct daily business.

Newton Airport helps Iowa Speedway, local businesses achieve By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News Editor’s Note: This is part two of a two-part series. Part one published in Monday’s Newton Daily News. A first impression of Newton — that is what the Newton Municipal Airport is for many companies traveling to the city to potentially bring their business into the local economy. Midland Aircraft Presi-

dent Ethan Nasalroad sees the airport as Newton’s third exit, and cannot think of a better place to open the door to the Nasalroad town. “The airport, right now, gives a first impression to everybody. The past history of really being

Maytag based helped a lot in getting the current facilities, which now we use as the first impression of Newton,” Nasalroad said. Never was that more important then when Maytag closed its doors in Newton, leaving an opening for new corporations to come into town. “The timing worked out really well. In 2005, there were rumblings of Maytag being sold. Sure enough in

2006, they were sold, but about that same time we had the speedway coming in. It changed us because we moved an awful lot of fuel to Maytag as a company but the timing couldn’t have been better for both us, and the town in that the speedway comes into play and also the town is trying to attract business and they are bringing people in,” Nasalroad said. A Newton woman faces up to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty on Monday to third-degree sexual abuse. Tori M. Kaiser, 22, was charged in May after confessing to having a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old male victim. She denied giving him marijuana and prescription medication, but admitted she had allowed him to use both in her apartment. Third-degree sexual abuse is a Class C felony and carries a maximum $10,000 fine and is punishable by up to 10 years in prison. Kaiser is scheduled to be sentenced at the Jasper County Courthouse on Oct. 12. Contact Abigail Pelzer at 641-792-3121 ext. 6530 or apelzer@newtondailynews.com

This is not a theory discussion; this is strictly an economic mission. We’re looking to actually tend some deals on this trip.” Portes came to the U.S. at the age of 9 — just before the
