Two major sets of summer events, which were held on the same weekend in 2015 and 2016, will be held on separate weekends in 2017. After two years of Newton Fest and Newton High School’s Alumni Weekend happening the same weekend, the two sets of events won’t overlap in the same way next year. The alumni events will happen the weekend of June 2-4, while the third annual Newton Fest celebration will take place the weekend of June 8-11. The NHS Alumni Association Board of Di-
rectors recently voted to schedule its 2017 annual celebration of all-alumni and class reunion events to the first weekend in June. Mark Hallam, a representative of the Newton Alumni Association, said he feels the move will provide advantages for both the alumni events and Newton Fest. “In recent years, newer events such as Thunder Nites and the Newton Fest celebration have created cross-competition for a single pool of attendees during the second weekend in June,” Hallam said. “As long-standing supporters of the City of Newton, our belief is there are enough activities for two very successful weekends. We came to believe two distinct celebrations — Alumni Weekend and Newton Fest — will only enhance economic development and marketing of the city. ALUMNI | 3A
By Alex Olp Newton Daily News COLFAX — Colfax’s annual demolition derby delivered promising entertainment once again as 2,000 people punched their tickets to watch 53 drivers smash into each other Saturday night. Organizer Brad Magg even claimed it as one of the best years of the very popular demolition derby since it first formed as a fundraiser for Colfax Main Street eight summers ago. The weather was perfect, the event attracted people as far away as Missouri and even a bachelorette group, and seating was more spread out than previous years with the help

of additional sets of bleachers. “Everything went very smoothly and perfectly as planned, which basically never happens,” Magg said Sunday afternoon while volunteers cleaned up at the Jasper County Fairgrounds. “Normally at this
point of the weekend everyone is burned out and tired, but everyone is still in good moods today and happy with how everything went. If we can have it go like this every year, we’d be very happy.” CARS | 3A

Pierson Newton Daily News Curb appeal issues and concerns within the downtown area were discussed at a recent city council meeting. Planning and Zoning Director Erin Chambers presented several areas where additional code enforcement may improve the overall look to the downtown area. “There are a handful of issues that continue to arise that are not easily addressed through the existing codes,” Chambers said. “Every year we just keep revisiting this and adding tools that will keep improvement happening.”
