Harrison of ‘Pawn Stars’ to speak at Bridgehouse Coffee
TV personality is endorsing Rubio for president By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News
Rick Harrison, a star from The History Channel’s hit TV show “Pawn Stars,” will be appearing on behalf of Marco Rubio at Bridgehouse Coffee in Newton on Saturday. Bridgehouse owner Brock Patterson confirmed Wednesday that Harrison will make a 9:15 a.m. appearance, and will share “his fascinating life journey” and why he is endorsing the U.S. Senator from Florida in the Harrison 2016 presidential race. Following the program, there will be time for fans to meet Harrison and get autographs and pictures. Patterson hosted Republican candidate Carly Fiorina earlier this summer, along with the Jasper County GOP’s small “straw poll” event. “I received a call from Rubio Justin Arnold, Rubio’s Iowa Political Director, asking if we would be interested in hosting the meet-and-greet,” Patterson said. “Although it’s been some HARRISON | 3A
NCSD discusses charges, other bus policy issues Jason W. Brooks/Daily News Buses turn into the Newton Community School District transportation center during the 2015-16 school year. At Monday’s NCSD board of education meeting, a lengthy discussion was held about how to approach busing and fees in a way that will improve travel to and from school.
Reconfiguration should reduce amount of extra busing By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News No decisions were on the table regarding busing at Monday night’s Newton Community School District board of education meeting, but a long discussion was held about the policy that affects transportation to and from school, and the charges to parents. At Monday’s meeting, held in the Emerson Hough conference room, Superintendent Bob Cal-
laghan and others led a 25-minute discussion regarding Board Policy 702.2, or student eligibility for bus service. The conversation began with discussion about fees for transporting certain students, and whether those fees should be waived, but broadened into many elements of transportation. The district is only set to take in about $5,500 in bus fees from parents this school year, after having brought in between $12,500 and $13,000 in
2014-15. “For grades 9 through 12, we don’t have a whole lot of students riding right now,” Callaghan said. “But with K-8, and K-6 especially, we are moving a lot of students all the way across town by bus.” Not only is the district not bringing in enough revenue to pay for charging fees, said board member Andy Elbert, but it would simplify the registration process and make parent open-enrollment decisions easier if
transportation fees were not a factor. “It’s not worth it — for $5,000 or $6,000 — to tell parents that we’re not going to pick up their kids unless they pay us,” Elbert said. Transportation was an important component of reconfiguration discussions held over the past couple of years. The board voted in March to reconfigure at the start of the 2016-17 school year, with BUSES | 3A

With a positive response from the kids, he decided to record a few songs and send them to friends, which led to a former college buddy and music producer suggesting he record them professionally. Releasing his first CD in 1997, Roberts has been performing ever since, much
to the delight of children around the country. In 2001, he hit the road full-time and has played venues such as New York City’s Symphony Space, Washington D.C.’s National Geographic Live, Los Angeles’ Getty Museum and Lollapalooza. ROBERTS | 3A
