Federal sentencing for LaVera set for Friday By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News A final federal sentencing for David A. LaVera is scheduled for Friday. This comes after his original sentencing ended with a judge rejecting his plea deal. The 34-year-old California man will appear in court at 11 a.m. the U.S. District Courthouse in Des Moines. LaVera pleaded

guilty to the charge of possession of child pornography with additional charges of sexual exploitation of a child and production of child pornography being dropped as part of a plea deal. Federal Judge John Alfred Jarvey said during the June sentencing hearing that he didn’t feel LaVera was going to get any punishment with the deal that

was in place. The federal sentencing could require LaVera serve more than five years in prison. The charges stemmed from an incident in which LaVera used his smartphone to video a 12-year-old victim taking a shower and a 13-year-old victim using the bathroom at a Newton home, according to court documents LAVERA | 3A

Foundation wants to sell former KinderCare building NCSD recently discussed possibilities By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News Looking at the lowered sinks and playground equipment at the former KinderCare preschool building, it’s easy to hear the young voices that used to grace the facility. The former KinderCare building, located between North Third Avenue and North Fourth Avenue

along West Second Street North in Newton, is still in excellent condition, and its owners — the Jasper Community Foundation — are hoping it can be used again soon. Dan Skokan, president of the foundation, said it could be used to either care for young children or for offices or many other purposes. “We’re taking kind of a slow approach to see who’s interested in the

building, and how they want to use it,” Skokan said. “If we can’t find a nonprofit to buy it, we will probably list in commercially. We are looking at our options of selling or renting the facility. Our preference is to sell.” The 8,400-square-foot building — built in 2000 — is surrounded by two playground areas with equipment, and there are outdoor basketball courts. KINDERCARE | 3A

Newton Main Street is hosting an upcoming downtown miniature golf event in support of United Way of Jasper County. The event, on Aug. 29, features nine Main Street District businesses hosting custom-made miniature golf holes inside their buildings. Golfers can sign up on the day of the event from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the Chamber of Commerce, 113 First Ave. W. and have until noon to finish the course. “The idea is to bring people downtown to have a good time at a family-friendly activity and increase visibility for downtown businesses at the same time,” said Andrew Bassman, director of Newton Main Street. United Way of Jasper County also will host fundraising activities during the event and promote its annual fundraising campaign, which starts on Sept. 3. “This is an excellent opportunity for us to let people know about our upcoming fundraising drive,” said Jessica Lowe, director of United Way of Jasper County. “It’s also a great way to show mutual support between United Way and Newton Main Street.” The event is open to the public. Cost is $6 per adult and $4 for kids under 16. The course covers just under a mile and takes about an hour and a half to play. Golf balls and putters will be provided, but golfers are welcome to use their own equipment. Scorecards will have a coupon for participating restaurants in the Main Street District, valid only on the day of the mini golf event, on the back. “We hope the coupon will encourage golfers to grab lunch with the family at a downtown restaurant after their round,” Bassman said.

other three candidates as those are submitted. Occupation: Engineering Team Leader with Pella Corporation, where I have worked for the past 13

years. Family: Wife Katie; daughter, Emily, 3; and son, Garrett, 7 months. Years of residence within the NCSD boundaries: 14. Educational background:

bachelors of Science in engineering, Iowa State University; MBA, University of Iowa. Three objectives I feel the NCSD board of education should have for the four years ahead: Establish plans for improvements to the Berg Complex, gain consistency across the district in leveraging technology to enhance communication between parents and teachers and improve the project planning process to align the “whatever it takes” mentality with good financial decision-making. The element of campus and student safety I feel needs

My position on Newton K-8 reconfiguration, as of today: The basic idea of reconfiguration isn’t necessarily bad. I believe there could be benefits in making a change. With the current situation, there are lots of details that need to be understood before a good decision can be made. Setting a date for when this plan is to be implemented without understanding all of these details isn’t wise. With the next five years projected for very little student enrollment growth, the district has CANTU | 3A

to be addressed most urgently in central Iowa: When considering student safety across all of central Iowa, I think of bullying. For NCSD specifically, the district is spread out. We need to be aware of children traveling within and around each campus. Understanding the impacts of social media like Facebook and Twitter will also be important. I understand there is work being done to update the bus routes, and the board has approved purchasing a new camera system for the buses, which will be a nice enhancement to the current practices and policies.
