By Ty Rushing Daily News Senior Staff Writer While the recent spotlight has been on the new Jasper County Veterans Memorial Complex situated on the Jasper County Courthouse’s east lawn, the original memorial on the south lawn hasn’t been forgotten. On Tuesday morning, three members of the Jasper County Vietnam Vets began the annual four hour process of cleaning and polishing the bronze cast statue that depicts one soldier holding a wounded comrade and yelling for help. Bud Pickett said it’s the third year the cleaning has taken place. The JCVV’s took up the cause of maintaining the statue after Linda Klepinger — director of the Centre for Arts &

Artists and wife of the sculptor, Nick, brought up the idea. “The first year we had a little bit of trouble. We had too many people working on it and got too much wax on it. Last year, we had to go through and start cleaning it off and we worked with Nick Klepinger on it,” Pickett said. Learning from their early mistake, the group now only has a handful of volunteers at a time work on the statue. Fellow veterans Randy Wagner and David Schnathorst joined Pickett for this year’s cleaning, typically done in August or September. “It’s going to look a lot shinier than it did before,” Wagner said. “Any complaints and we are going to quit,” Schnathorst added. “Any complaints,

they can have it next time,” Wagner quipped back. To help pass the time, the group will joke and reminisce. Pickett and Schnathorst have known each other since the eighth-grade and just went to their 50th class reunion this summer. Wagner likes to tease the duo about their age and about them being drafted versus volunteering like he chose to. All jokes aside, the group knows the importance of their job and how significant this monument is to the men and women who served, and their families. “Proud to serve, just like the old military days,” Wagner said.

A Newton mother is charged with child endangerment after it was discovered her 12-year-old daughter became preganant as the result of alleged sexual abuse. Tina M. Durant, 37, was charged Friday following an investigation in which police determined the victim was sleeping in the same bed as Jacob White, 24 of Newton, and was suspected of engaging in sexual behavior between Durant April and May. During a doctor’s visit the victim was heard telling Durant “I tried to tell you several times,” according to a police report. Multiple witnesses indicated they had ad-

The Animal Task Force presented a draft of the Animal Control Ordinance to the city council Monday. Classification of dogs was among the key points discussed. The discussion initially began with the topic of pitbulls and whether they should they be classified differently than other breeds of dogs. The council decided that they did not want to classify certain breeds, but they did want a solution of how to deal the with the behavior of the dog. Among classifications, dangerous ani-

mals covers a variety of animals, not dogs. Lisa Gibbons, an Animal Task Force representative, explained that they wanted to start with a classification of problematic dogs and not initially potentially vicious. A problematic dog would be a dog at large that has not caused serious harm; a dog that has bitten is not considered problematic. “If we come out of the gates saying your dog is vicious, which is brutal, ferocious, savage, malicious with intent, you know, dogs are family members and I’m afraid it is going to shut people down,” Gibbons said.

“You are still getting every single part of holding them responsible, that’s not changing.” If a problematic dog has two strikes against them they become classified a vicious dog and must be spayed or neutered. If that dog goes without incident for one year, the vicious classification can be dismissed, but the dog will remain spayed or neutered. The task force sees it as a way to get ahead of the problem by educating the ORDINANCE See Page 5A
