Prairie City’s annual Sweet Corn Feed draws relaxed, hungry crowd By Mike Mendenhall Prairie City News PRAIRIE CITY — Dan Adams relaxed in a foldout lawn chair on the bandstand in Prairie City’s Garden Square Park Saturday as he does ever year during the dog days of summer. Two turkey fryers powered by propane boiling two large pots of water sit with him on the concrete and brick amphitheater. By noon he boiled about seven dozen ears of the Iowa Sweet Corn picked from Mitchilleville farmer John Brandhof ’s acreage just a few miles west off Highway 163. When Adams arrives, the corn is shucked and ready to cook — prepared by a small group of local volunteers. “I don’t eat too much of it. I get tired of looking at corn by the end of the day, but I’ll have a pork sandwich,” he said with a grin. Adams has volunteered to cook the corn on the cob at Prairie City’s annual Sweet Corn Feed for the last nine years. The feed was created and is organized by 79-year-

over their experiences then there may be other women in the Newton area who could benefit from doing the same. “We just started laughing and sharing stories about the challenges and benefits of working from home. If we are connecting about this there have to be other women in the Newton area who are also working from home, feeling a little isolated maybe and wanting to connect,” Schuster said. A Newton Police officer is on leave pending an investigation into domestic assault charges. Dustin S. Hamell, 29, is accused of physically assaulting his fiance, with whom he has a child. According to court records the two were in a physical altercation in which Hamell slammed a door on her arm while she was trying to get into their child’s room. He is also accused of pushing the victim twice — once in a hallway and another time in a bedroom against a dresser. The victim had bruises on her arm. He is charged with domestic abuse assualt.
Hamell has been an officer with the Newton Police Department for three years. Acting Police Chief Wes Breckenridge said Monday the Newton Police Department was made aware of the criminal case July 29 after notification from the Jasper County Sheriff ’s Office. Hamell has been placed on paid administrative leave, pending a full investigation. “Domestic assault allegations are serious allegations that receive our full attention,” Breckenridge said. New Haven, located on First Avenue East, collected enough crayons, pencils and pens to support 400 students in need of supplies for the upcoming school year. Co-pastor Jane Sibula said 25 percent of the church’s annual operating budget goes to community outreach projects, such as Saturday’s drive.

NPD officer on leave following domestic assault arrest

Lt. Rob Burdess has been selected as the next police chief of the Newton Police Department. “It ’s definitely a great honor and I look forward to leading the fine Burdess men and women of the Newton Police Department and continuing to make Newton a safe place to work and live,” Burdess said. Burdess has accepted a conditional offer from City Administrator Bob Knabel. Burdess has 18 years of experience in law enforcement, serving both
the University of Iowa Police Department and the Newton force. He has served as a detective and patrol officer. He also worked as the DARE coordinator, commander of the SWAT team, traffic safety coordinator, field training officer, K-9 instructor and president of the Newton Police Association. Previously, Burdess served as president of the Iowa State Police Association, president of the Rabiner Treatment Center and as an adjunct instructor at DMACC. Burdess has a bachelor’s and master’s degree in public administration and recently completed the police staff and command school at Northwestern University Center for Public Safety.
