City offers two weeks of fun with parks summer camps By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News The Newton Parks Department is once again planning youth summer camps for kids, this year presenting two weeks worth of summer fun. Kids ages 7 to 12 are invited to participate in the hourand-a-half long event that is planned from 10:30 a.m. to noon Aug. 3-7 and again Aug. 10-14. Last year, the department held its first summer camp, a three-day program. This year after finding activities, and ideas to fill a couple weeks worth, the camp was bumped to two weeks. Kids can participate in one or both weeks. “There are so many options we could do. It was hard to narrow it down to three days worth. As I was coming up with idea, I broke it down to the first week is more activity based like crafts and the second week is more sports focused,” Parks Assistant Secretary Randi Fitzgerald said. At Monday’s regular meeting, the Newton Community School District board of education agreed unanimously to move the 2016 ceremony up one week to May 22, 2016.

Newton High School’s 2016 graduation date is May 22 Moves away from traditional Memorial Day Weekend date By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News Since the first Newton High School graduate picked up a diploma in 1875, the world has seen the invention of the automobile, two world wars, 30 Summer Olympics and a transition from blackboards to digital screens. There have also been 140 graduation ceremonies, with each one holding special meaning to those involved.

So changing the date of the 141st ceremony isn’t one anyone seemed to take lightly, especially NHS Principal Bill Peters. Peters spoke at the Newton Community School District board of education meeting to explain why graduation needed to be moved away from its planned May 29 date. The board voted unanimously to change the date of next year’s NHS graduation ceremony to Sunday,

May 22, 2016. The 2015-16 calendar has been revised more than once by the board in the past several months, including after Gov. Terry Branstad signed into law a more relaxed Aug. 23 startdate week. The board adopted a schedule at its April 27 meeting that had NHS graduation on May 29. Peters, a 1983 NHS graduate, told the board it would not be possible for regular high school staff to complete, in the same week, both all the work involved with the exit of graduating seniors along with the

many details associated with semester finals. “I love graduation,” Peters said. “It’s a great time. It’s a blast. But with the schedule we have this year, we have an early dismissal the last day of school (Friday, May 27), and then everyone is gone. No one sticks around once school is done. Families make plans. Plus, graduation the same week as finals is simply just not possible with all that we have to do. I can pull a bunch of staff off of graduation, but I can’t pull staff off of finals.”

How much money do Iowa’s K-12 schools really need? And how much can the state government afford to spend? Those are the weighty questions the Iowa Legislature tried to wrestle with this spring. After a compromise had finally been struck, a proposal was sent to Gov. Terry Branstad, who vetoed a one-time $55.7 million one-time appropriation that would have accompanied a 1.25 percent increase in funding from 2014-15. Allen That veto led to a whole new set of partisan anger and accusations, along with a call for a possible special session. However, there’s not much optimism that a special session will be scheduled by the July 29 deadline, so that leaves Republicans and Democrats bickering at one another. It also leaves educators just as much at odds with high-ranking state officials as they were during the spring funding demonstrations and debates. State Sen. Chaz Allen spoke at the Jasper County Democrats’ monthly meeting last Thursday. He

Board approves new AED Missioning Ceremony, for Annex building blessings at Skiff By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News The Jasper County Board of Supervisors approved the purchase of a new Philips Heartstart Automated External Defibrillator for the Jasper County Annex building at its regular Tuesday meeting. “A while back we purchased the Philips Heartstart AEDs for all the county facilities. The one in the Annex has died. It is more effective to purchase a new one with a warranty than to send ours in and spend money to potentially get it rebuilt,” Human Resource Director Dennis Simon said. “Currently, we do not have one in the Annex working.” He requested the board put an additional $1,925 in the county
