‘Dana’s Road to Recovery’ A fundraising campaign has begun for family of stroke victim Dana Curtis By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News
Jamee A. Pierson/Daily News Mercy Medical Center has completed its acquisition of Skiff Medical Center effective Wednesday. A Missioning Ceremony is scheduled for July 14.
BAXTER — Neal Curtis has found himself doing many things since May 11, but he has been at the same place at least once each day: Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. “I haven’t missed a day,” he said. Curtis’s wife, Dana
Doty Curtis, was taken to Mercy after her oldest daughter, Macy, found her at the family’s Baxter home, suffering from severe symptoms from her Type I diabetes. A couple of days after she was taken to Mercy, she suffered a stroke, and hasn’t fully regained consciousness. Neal said he’s hoping to have Dana moved this week to an open bed at On With Life, an Ankeny rehabilitation facility specializing in brain injuries. DANA | 3A
Mercy, Skiff Medical Center combine operations Newton Daily News Following months of study and discussion on the benefits of combining health care operations, Mercy Medical Center has completed the acquisition of Skiff Medical Center in Newton. Wednesday Skiff became a fully owned Mercy hospital and a member of Mercy Health Network. Skiff, which has served the health care needs of Newton and central Iowa for almost a century, will initially continue to operate under the Skiff name. “We welcome members of the Skiff Medical Center to the Mer-
cy Family,” Mercy President Bob Ritz said. “Through our working together, Skiff Medical Center will continue to provide quality care in the safest environment possible. As a vital part of the Newton community, we look forward to helping improve access to specialty services and providing a remarkable patient experience for everyone we have the privilege to serve.” “During the last 94 years, Skiff Medical Center has celebrated many milestones, but this is perhaps the most momentous since our dedication,” Skiff CEO Brett Altman said. “We are blessed Mercy recognizes the great work
of our caregivers and staff. We believe there are wonderful opportunities to improve the access and availability of care close to home through this integration. Our goal remains to serve Newton and Jasper County for many years to come.” Mercy Des Moines and Skiff will host a Missioning Ceremony July 14 to officially welcome the former city-owned facility to its new role in Catholic health care. The Rev. Martin J. Amos, Bishop of the Diocese of Davenport, will bless the Skiff facility and offer a blessing of the hands for all medical staff and staff.

Newton Community Day set at Kinnick Stadium By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News Start making plans to travel east to Kinnick Stadium for Newton Community Day Sept. 26 when the Iowa Hawkeyes football team takes on the Mean Green of the University of North Texas. Hosted by the University of Iowa Athletic Department, it is an opportunity for residents of Newton to enjoy a day in Iowa City at a reduced cost. “We recognize that there are a significant number of Hawkeye fans in Newton that may have never had
the opportunity to visit Kinnick Stadium. We are offering discounts to make it more affordable to come the first time or to make a repeat visit,” University of Iowa’s Director of External Relations Rick Klatt said. “We hope the city of Newton and its residents will have a significant presence in the stadium and that all enjoy a game day on the UI campus,” Klatt said. Any member of the Newton community can purchase an unlimited number of $40 group rate adult tickets and $25 youth tickets. A regular KINNICK | 3A
Demolition of the Jasper County Care Facility continues to move forward with Shive-Hattery Civil Engineer Christopher Bauer speaking about the formation of a bid packet at the Jasper County Board of Supervisors meeting Tuesday. Bauer went over the different aspects to consider when making the packet, including many items that need to be done before any building is knocked down. It also includes the youth shelter located next door to the county care facility, which is optional for the board. “It seems like it should be easy enough to just go knock it down but looking at all of the utilities and the potential for hazardous materials, the amount of disturbed area, a lot of approvals that if the city and county don’t do it property it can quickly cause problems,” Bauer said. “The proposal we put together includes topographic survey and base mapping,

existing utilities, man holes, storm sewers, drainage, once we tear all of those down have a plan of how that looks when we are done so we don’t just have a big hole.” Shive-Hattery will
have an asbestos abatement specialist look at the work that has already been done in the building to make sure it meets standards. The updated review must be COUNTY | 3A
