ommended the board accept Lucas’ resignation effective June 30. The motion passed in a 6-0 vote with only board member, B.J. Russell, absent. Lucas will be put on paid administrative leave until that date. The administrator will also be paid for his remaining vacation earned in the amount of $5,597.13. The superintendent was not pres-

Weight loss, chronic disorders highlight third Newton Talks event By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News The third edition of Newton Talks presented by the Newton Wellness Coalition will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Newton Arboretum. Three unique individuals will tell their stories and answer questions regarding topics from losing a significant amount of weight to living with a chronic disorder. Collin Jacobsen Born three month premature along with his twin sister, Collin Jacobsen only weighed 1 pound 15 ounces. Soon after, doctors discovered he had bleeding in his

brain, which he said led to cerebral palsy. He said that the bleeding occurred in the right side of his brain which controls the left side of his body. Jacobsen went through a lot of physical therapy to help develop his motor skills but is still not coordinated with his left hand. He said that he was always encouraged by his parents to do anything he wanted and growing up he played baseball, basketball, participated in gymnastic and played football, which became the sport he put most focus on. After years of desire and determination, his work paid off. He wanted to be able to play his se-

4-year-old girl seriously injured while playing with lighter By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News A 4-year-old Newton girl was seriously burned Monday while playing with a lighter. Newton police and fire responded to a call at 11:25 a.m. to an apartment at 904 N. Sixth Ave. E. The victim, whose name was not released, was transported to Iowa City with second-degree burns on 20-25 percent of her body. Initial information from the investigation showed the incident was “a tragic accident involving a child playing with a lighter,” the Newton Police Department said in a news release. The case remains under investigation.

The beginning of what could be a long line of presidential candidate visits to Jasper County will start as early as this week. Jasper County Republican Party Chairman Marshall Critchfield confirmed Monday that Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal is scheduled to make a campaign stop Friday in Newton. He’s scheduled to appear at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Moo’s BBQ, 103 W. Second St. N. Knowing Jindal might have gubernatorial duties that could preHuckabee empt the Louisiana governor’s appearances at any time, Critchfield said Jindal is “as 100 percent confirmed as a sitting governor can be.” Critchfield also detailed an upcoming appearance in Newton by former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee. The Republican candidate for president is scheduled to appear at 7:30 a.m. July 18 at the Midtown Cafe, 120 First St. N. Huckabee is also listed as a speaker for the Family Leadership Summit, set to be held at Stephens Auditorium in Ames the same day. Huckabee relinquished his Fox News cable TV show in January to prepare for the campaign. He has made several appearances in Iowa recently. Huckabee began as a Baptist minister, and later became the 44th Governor of Arkansas, serving from 1996 to 2007. He placed second in the 2007 Iowa Straw Poll and ran for presiJindal dent in 2008, and despite winning a caucus or primary in Iowa and seven other states, dropped his bid on March 4, 2008. He announced his 2016 presidential bid on May 15 in Hope, Ark. — the hometown he shares with former President Bill Clinton.
