Jasper County Fair ‘Round Up’ kicking things off for fair in July By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News New this year, the Jasper County Fair is hosting a “Round Up” kick-off event for the fair starting at 4 p.m. Saturday at the fairgrounds. Free to all, events include the Barnyard Babies contest at 4:30 p.m., arts and crafts booths from 4 to 9 p.m. and the crowning of the Jasper County Fair Queen at 7 p.m. “Jasper County Fair Round Up

was created by a group of volunteers that wanted to do a couple of things. We have a couple of events that are included in the fair that don’t get a lot of attention because there are so many things going on,” Organizer Rhonda Guy said. “One of those was the baby review. When they had a new gal take over she asked to bring it back to the fair. We found that because of the amount of people that go to the review, we didn’t really have room at the fair to have it going on.”

Allen: First legislative session was a ‘crash course’ By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News There were certainly some proposals state Sen. Chaz Allen would liked to have seen passed during the 2015 Iowa legislative session. However, he feels the legislature reached its goals in some key areas; and as a rookie senator, he received an important education. Allen said some of the lessons he learned about the legislature went far beyond procedure and protocol. “Overall, this session was as much about me learning the process as it was about passing meaningful legislation,” he said. “I can help my district better if I understand all parts of the process better, and I’m getting there.”

Projects for the coming year were discussed and approved at the Newton Parks Board meeting Wednesday. More than $400,000 will be spent in area parks and at Westwood Gold Course. “This is from bond proceeds that were passed June 1,” Public Works Director Keith Laube said. “One that we already got bids on are the four pillars at Maytag Park to rebuild those. They are basically falling apart. The base is falling apart the bricks are cracked.” Thought to be built in the 1930s, the pillars at the entrance of the park have held the test of time, but after being hit by a vehicle and wear and tear from a former gate, the pillars are in need of replacement. The total cost to replace the four pillars was proposed at $27,875. Two new year-round restrooms were approved for Maytag Park and Woodland Park. At Woodland, a bathroom will be located near the shelter house, and after discussing location at Maytag, a consensus was made to place it near the Maytag Bowl, toward the south end of the parking lot. The two bathrooms total $45,000. Work at area parks include asphalt and surface work on the six tennis courts at Aurora Park along with playground equipment and a boulder park at

The idea came to move that event and the crowning of the fair queen to an earlier time so more people could participate in those events, who might typically be at another event during the fair as well as providing a kick-off to the fair, similar to the corn dog kickoff for the Iowa State Fair. “We wanted to try and get those two things together and this date was chosen to put us 30 days ahead of the fair and give us
