After this weekend, the club made up of Newton High School graduates will have added 177 new members. Newton High School’s 140th annual graduation ceremony is set for 3 p.m. Sunday at the Maytag Bowl. In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held in the same NHS gym, where the ceremony ended up being held last
year. The gym is where many attendees will first meet Sunday. The school district will operate a free shuttle service between the high school and the Maytag Bowl, beginning at 1:45 p.m. and continuing until the 3 p.m. ceremony start time. This year’s commencement speaker will be Rachel Prendergast. The daughter of Jim and Jennifer Prendergast is graduating with a host of honors and scholar-
ships, and she plans to compete on the swim team at Loras College in Dubuque next year. Also speaking at Sunday’s graduation will be senior class president Jesse Cochran, the son of Tammy and Lee Cochran. He and Prendergast are among the class’s seven valedictorians; the others are Abigail Jolivette, Hannah Scotton, Christopher Thorpe, Andrea Van Wyk and Jarom Williams. GRADUATION | 3A
