Fire destroys barn, antique items Newton, Colfax, Baxter firefighters respond By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News

Jason W. Brooks/Daily News A fire destroyed a barn late Tuesday afternoon on the property of Bonnie and Roy Eilert, located on West 62nd Street North, west of Newton. The cause wasn’t immediately known.

When a fire took out a barn on the property of Bonnie and Roy Eilert late Tuesday afternoon, it might have taken out some pieces of history as

well. The cause of a barn fire on the Eilert’s property, on West 62nd Street North near Highway F48, west of Newton, was not immediately known. But what is known is there were some items inside the barn that had

been destroyed. The barn caught on fire around 5:40 p.m. Newton, Colfax and Baxter firefighters quickly got out to the property — located about five miles west of downtown Newton — and saved a shed, some vehicles and the main house, but couldn’t save the barn, a camper or a small shed. Supervisors approve Beck’s plans By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News The Jasper County Board of Supervisors granted approval to a corn seed retail and distribution center planned for Colfax at its Tuesday meeting. The approval is for an application for Beck’s Hybrid to receive benefits from the High Quality Jobs Program,

a $20,000 forgivable loan to the company, a second zero percent interest, five-year $20,000 loan to be used for initial development and a five-year property tax abatement in exchange for the $15 million economic investment. “This resolution allows us to go to the state, there is a meeting Courtesy of FRK Design This artist’s rendering of the former Hy-Vee building on First Avenue West shows what the finished product will look like once it’s renovated to become the new Newton Community School District administration building. The facility is set to be occupied by several NCSD elements when the district reconfigures at the start of the 2016-17 school year.

NCSD to spend $2.4M to renovate new admin building By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News

Jamee A. Pierson/Daily News JEDCO Director Chaz Allen received approval from the Jasper County Board of Supervisors to move forward with plans for Beck’s Hybrid corn seed retail and distribution center in Colfax.

While some of the 35-minute discussion about the new administration building also involved how the estimated $2,425,000 project will be financed, there was a great deal of talk about the details of the structure, which could end up including Cardinal red as one of its exterior and interior colors at the Newton Community School board meeting Monday. Dave Briden of the Des

Moines design firm Frevert, Ramsey & Kobes made a presentation at the meeting, held in the Newton High School multi-purpose room. He used the slide projector and listed several costs, material types and process descriptions that will be used to renovate the building. The building, located on the north side of First Avenue West, was home to a Hy-Vee grocery store for many years. It was purchased by the school district last fall, and the board voted unanimously to approve FRK as lead

designer on its renovation. Briden also produced a detailed visual timeline for the renovation, which will help many other district changes happen smoothly if it is completed by June 2016. The board took on several other detailed subjects at Monday’s three-hour, 40-minute meeting, including a vote to implement its new reconfiguration plan beginning at the start of the 2016-17 school year. City to consider expanded housing initiative By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News An expanded housing initiative will be on the agenda at the next city council meeting after an updated plan was discussed Monday. Newton Housing Development Corporation President Jennifer Cook and Director Amanda Price made a presentation on Fairmeadows North, a new home construction plan for the city and responded to questions the council had posed previously. The enhanced initiative would come in the form of an initial grant to the NHDC for $207,950 to purchase land, find contractors and build six houses, with the hope that the contractors would

be able to sell the houses within a year. Should it not be able to sell the houses, the NHDC would buy them back at 80 percent of the estimated cost, about $196,000 for the $245,000 homes. The NHDC would then be responsible for selling the homes and recouping the money for the city. That buy back guarantee is an added incentive to builders to invest in the community with less risk than buying the property and building on their own. The city bonded more than $3.6 million in May 2014 for the Newton Housing Initiative. Money for the new grant and worse case scenario buy backs would come from that first Jamee A. Pierson/Daily News initiative. The NHDC proposed an expanded housing initiative, which includes purchasing six lots in HOUSING | 3A

Fairmeadows North along with 7.3 acres adjacent to the lots and an additional lot of South 12th Avenue West.
