forum for a primary election in recent years, as the party nominations for county and state seats aren’t usually contested. “As a voter, I think having the opportunity to submit questions about issues to candidates and hearing their response is a great opportunity,” Henderson said. “The citizens of our communi-

By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News It’s not usually polite to mention a woman’s age. Thursday, Jasper County Sheriff John Halferty made an exception. Halferty pointed out 93-yearold Helen Holdefer, the widow of Howard Holdefer, who died in the line of duty as a reserve Jasper County deputy in 1973. She attended Thursday’s Peace Officers Memorial for fallen county law enforcement who died during active service, and Halferty used his time at the podium to acknowledge his department’s only loss in the line of duty. “Howard has been gone for 42 years, but he is not forgotten,” Halferty said. A change of venue and a new award were among changes to the ceremony this year. It was moved from Union Cemetery to the Jasper County Courthouse lawn to give it more visibility and accessibility and the Newton Daily News presented its first Law Enforcement Employee of the Year award to Newton Police officer Brian Foster. All local law enforcement and about 100 people attended the National Police Week event, which included the sounds of

bagpiper Ron Husted, a color guard manned by sheriff ’s deputies and local firefighters and words from Halferty, pastor Randy Danley, Newton Police Chief Rob Burdess, Beau Murray of the Prairie City Police Department, Newton Mayor Mike Hansen and Newton Daily News Editor Abigail Pelzer. “We moved the ceremo-

ny here to a central location where folks can easily get in here,” Burdess said. “And to see we live in a community where folks look up from storefronts, or stop as they drive by to see there is a police ceremony and take an interest; that makes me feel pretty good.” POLICE | 3A

Anyone interested in the property has until 4 p.m. on Monday to submit an offer. City council is set to approve an acceptable proposal should it be presented before the deadline. Also before the council is an amendment to remove an unneeded traffic signal at the intersection of First Avenue East and East Third Street. COUNCIL | 3A

Divisions in CMB partnership brought to forefront at joint meeting BAXTER — The future of the 28-year CMB sports sharing agreement was put into doubt Wednesday night, as school boards for the Collins-Maxwell and Baxter Community School Districts met in a joint meeting and failed to reach a consensus on a common future. School board members from both districts outlined very different visions for the next phase of a CMB partnership. Baxter continued its push for whole-grade sharing with Collins-Maxwell to boost academic offerings while keeping the school district small, which as seen as an attribute to many Baxter parents

and teachers. But Collins-Maxwell outlined a plan to create a regional school district, consisting of not only the CMB schools but also reaching out to other area districts in hopes of creating a larger 3A school system. The school boards brought in a representative from the Iowa School Board Association to facilitate the meeting. During the nearly 3.5-hour community discussion both boards began the night continuing their talks on the feasibility of wholegrade sharing which exposed a weaknesses in their current partnership. Baxter Board president Jon Northrup said CMB | 10A

WHERE IT’S AT 75 CENTS

The city is looking for a developer to construct four duplexes on several former D&D lots. Last year, the city purchased properties in the 300 block between East Fourth Street North and East Fifth Street North. The structures were deemed dilapidated and demolished through the D&D program. With the lots ready for construction, the city is looking to sell the property to an interested developer. The city is hoping that developer would construct four duplexes with a value of at least $160,000 each within the four buildings.
