Back to the drawing board for housing initiative By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News
Jason W. Brooks/Daily News Teachers Shelly Fitzgerald and Allison Grier made a presentation about Red Pride Service Day at Monday’s Newton Community School District board of education meeting. The meeting also included a contentious discussion about personnel decisions at the school-principal level.
School board approves principal assignments Bartello named TJ principal By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News Before the Newton Community School District board of education could decide whether to approve the personnel reports presented at Monday’s regular meeting, the board had to decide whether to even hear the information in its agenda-assigned sequence. Board member Donna Cook motioned to postpone the hearing of the leadership positions in the
certified and classified personnel reports until Superintendent Bob Callaghan could be present at a board meeting, be it later in the evening or at the May 18 meeting. Cook wanted to ask Callaghan questions about principal assignments for 2015-16, and the superintendent wasn’t present at Monday’s meeting when the board reached the personnel item on the agenda. Her motion to delay the report until Callaghan could be with the board was seconded by

board member Robyn Friedman, but after a lengthy discussion, the motion was defeated, 5-2. The names of next year’s three new principal assignments were then announced as part of the personnel item. The board approved the report, 5-2, with Cook and Friedman voting against it. Tom Bartello will be the principal at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School in 2015-16. A proposal to enhance the Newton Housing Initiative Incentive Program was voted down 4-2 by the Newton City Council at its Monday meeting. Council Members Jeff Price and Steve Mullen voted for the proposed change of funding for the Newton Housing Development Corporation to buy land for five houses along with having the NHDC take on the debt of the construction cost or 80 percent of the appraised value if the property
does not sell within a certain time frame. “I have some pretty big concerns about the proposal here. First of all it has changed pretty significantly from the last discussion,” Council Member Noreen Otto said. “I am concerned about buying property and not knowing the price of it.” Council Member Lin Chapé echoed Otto’s concerns and brought up what seemed like a rush to a decision on the matter and the risk that is involved in spending tax payer money. School board scales back stadium plans By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News
Jason W. Brooks/Daily News The last of the art pieces that are part of the First Avenue of Sculpture and Art project was set up for display Monday. The artist who created the spider, John Brommel of Des Moines, was in Newton on Monday, and he said it’s rare to find as much “hex” tubing made of aluminum as he found before he created the piece. It’s attached to front of the Farm Bureau building, on the south side of First Avenue East, between E. Fourth St. S. and E. Fifth St. S.
A project to refurbish one of the Newton Community School District’s most visible symbols of Cardinal pride received a green light on Monday night. The NCSD board of education voted unanimously to approve a scaled-back version of a plan to make some major press box changes at H.A. Lynn Field. After the board tabled action last week on bids for the home press box and build a visitor’s side press box at the stadium, the board voted Monday to allow the design firm of Frevert, Ramsey & Kobes to have their plans put in motion. The firm of TBB & M of Indianola came in as a lower bidder for the project, and will be the contractor. There won’t be much time to make major changes to the plans from here on, as work is set to begin as
