Benson in the correct ‘column’ to win competition TJ, Woodrow Wilson combine for spelling bees

Cardinal Lanes closing By Jocelyn Sheets Newton Daily News Cardinal Lanes closes its doors May 15. It is not what Jeff and Bev Van Blair wanted. It’s not what anyone wanted, but it’s happening. They had weathered the ebb and flow of business for more than 34 years. This time it was too much. “We want to thank the community for its patronage all these years,” Bev Van Blair said. “We especially want to thank our weekly league bowlers who stayed with us this year. It meant a lot to us.” Cardinal Lanes has gone through foreclosure proceedings and will be sold at a Jasper County Sheriff ’s Sale at 10 a.m. on May 19. “We’ll miss being here for sure. We raised our family here, and it was a good place to be. All of our kids worked here and have stories to share of doing that,” Van Blair said. “Mostly, I hope we’ve instilled a love of the sport in those kids who have gone throughout youth program and have become adult bowlers. “We hope they all love bowling as much as we do.” The Van Blairs helped establish the push for high school

By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News English is a tricky language with some wacky rules. Grace Benson remembered one rule in a way that helped her win a competition. Benson, a fifth-grader, spelled the word “column” correctly — which her Woodrow Wilson Elementary School competitor had missed — then spelled “condition” correctly to win the school-wide spelling bee Thursday night. Benson’s mastery of a silent consonant helped

her triumph, and it capped off an evening of competition, games, art and fun involving Woodrow Wilson students and their families and the host school, Thomas Jefferson Elementary. Since the Newton Community School District doesn’t have an official spelling bee, the competition, produced by faculty and the dual Jefferson-Woodrow parent-teacher organization is the largest of its kind in the city. Many of the enthusiastic spellers from both schools showed off their impressive vocabularies by rattling off word after word correctly. Woodrow Wilson held its preliminary rounds last week, while Jefferson held its preliminary rounds SPELLING | 3A

Jocelyn Sheets/Daily News Jeff and Bev Van Blair have been the owners of Cardinal Lanes for 34 years. They will close Newton’s 20-lane bowling center May 15. The community has 15 days to bowl at Cardinal Lanes before it shuts down. Cardinal Lanes is open noon to 10 p.m. during the week and weekends noon to midnight.

bowling as a varsity sport. Van Blair said she and her husband ran the program for the first 10 years as a club sport. She said they worked with other bowling center proprietors across the state of Iowa on behalf of high school bowling. Newton High’s boys and girls’ bowling teams have been competitive since being established as a sanctioned varsity sport seven years ago. Cardinal Lanes provided the teams a place to practice and hold meets without cost. “We have a contingency plan

in place in case Cardinal Lanes does not reopen,” said Scott Garvis, NHS activities director. “Our teams will practice and hold meets at Mustangs Lanes in Monroe. We want to make sure our student athletes have the opportunity to continue our strong bowling programs.” Van Blair said it was important to them the young people continue to bowl. They’ve had strong youth leagues at Cardinal Lanes over the years. LANES | 3A

City forming Animal Protection and Control Review Committee By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News To comply with the Animal Protection and Control ordinance, the city council is looking to appoint an Animal Protection and Control Review Committee at its Monday meeting. The Newton Police Department has recently designated three dogs problematic and/ or vicious and has received one written notice of appeal that must go before a review committee. If a dog is found to be problematic or vicious, the dog owner may request a hearing before a review committee on the determination by contacting the city within 15 days of the notice. Proposed members of the committee include Emily Thomason, a member of the public, Sarah Siperstein, director of the Jasper County

Animal Rescue League and the police chief or his designee. The committee would serve a term of one year and be responsible for scheduling a hearing to determine if the designated dog will remain with the designation of problematic or vicious or if the decision will be reversed. Two ordinances are up for the third and final reading before the council. The amendment to the outside parking and storage of trailers, watercrafts and motorhomes and the addition of a leash law for dogs not on the owner’s private property are set to be approved and placed into effect. Additional conversation could take place of the motorhome subject including what type of hard surface it must be placed on, how many are allowed and agricultural exemptions. COUNCIL | 3A
