Progress Industries clients to be led by law enforcement By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News Newton Police Lt. Wayne Winchell knows he gets huge support and thanks from the community for his work with the Special Olympics Torch Run. It’s a moment at the midpoint of Newton’s leg of the run, however, that really speaks to him.

When the Special Olympics Iowa run comes through Newton on May 16, starting at the Casey’s on the east edge of town and stopping at the Jasper County Courthouse for a ceremony and photos, Winchell hopes to again experience a magical moment. He’ll be joined by other law enforcement personnel, running in support of individuals with physical and mental disabilities. “For me, the joy that I see on the faces of the Olympians when we meet on the courthouse lawn is what it is all about,” Winchell said. “If running a little more than four miles across Newton is what it takes to raise money and awareness of the Special Olympics, then we will do it as long as we are physically able to do so.” The Newton leg of the Torch Run concludes on Highway 6

West, near the entrance of the Westwood Golf Course. It’s part of a statewide relay in a leadup to the 2016 Special Olympics Iowa Summer Games, being held May 19-21 at Iowa State University in Ames. The deadline for law enforcement personnel to register is Friday. “So far, I have runners signed on from the Newton Police, the Jasper County Sheriff ’s Office and the Department of Corrections,” Winchell said. Melissa Butler, of Progress Industries, said there will be about 10 to 15 athletes involved who also represent PI. Approximately 20 athletes from the area will participate in May 20 events in Ames. NCSD board discusses culture surveys By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News A district culture survey was the topic of the longest discussion item at Monday’s regular Newton Community School District Board of Education meeting. The 40-minute discussion about the direction of a possible staff culture survey, which was not on the agenda as an action item, came after a respected Heartland AEA representative discussed some of the benefits of a product called a Denison Culture Survey. The

discussion included the timing of a survey, given the district is about to reconfigure into four K-4 elementary school campuses, the cost of hiring a firm for formal help and how much planning should go into a survey, and the definition of culture versus climate. NCSD Board Member Donna Cook said she feels the district should move ahead with a survey, rather than wait until the fall once the reconfigured campuses are operational. CULTURE | 3A

Central website suggested for City of Newton By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News A centralized web presence for easier user access was the highlight of Happy Medium’s suggestions for city stakeholders. Happy Medium, a Des Moines marketing firm which reviewed the city’s marketing efforts, spoke with Newton Housing Development Corporation, Newton Development Corporation, Newton Main Street, Greater Newton Area Chamber of Commerce, Newton Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Newton Community School District and made recommendations on how they, along with the city, can be more efficient and effective in future endeavors. Happy Medium Account Director Kristen Walker said the current city website serves many

purposes and is useful to residents. Through their research, Walker and her associates found many of the other city group’s websites have overlapping information or information that could be strategically combined into one website. “Thinking about the user and their first search, getting them to the City of Newton’s website and having that information in a very easy to consume, easy to navigate format is really important,” Walker said. While an organization such as the Newton Community School District can benefit from having an individual web presence, Happy Medium found that each of the other stakeholders could benefit from a combined website. “One of the things they really hounded upon was a website is one of the most valuable,

operations. With a combined website, the organization leader would no longer be responsible for maintaining a website, but a page within the website instead. Beyond the website, Happy Medium made an
