NHS Hall of Fame inductees announced

Newton Daily News The jaws of life were used to extract the driver in a single vehicle rollover Thursday night on Highway 6 near Interstate 80 west of Newton. There were no injuries reported and the driver did not seek medical treatment after being released. The vehicle in the accident is registered to Steven McBride, but it is unknown if he was personally involved in the accident, according to Jasper County Deputy Sheriff Duane Rozendaal. The crash remains under investigation, he said. A witness on scene told the Newton Daily News the vehicle was traveling westbound on Highway 6 when he observed it “barrel roll” into the north ditch. The vehicle came to a rest on its side. Baxter Police, the Jasper County Sheriff ’s Office and Colfax Fire Department Crews were on scene. County officials were notified of a traffic sign that was knocked down during the accident. The vehicle was towed by Barney’s of Newton.

When the Newton Community School District board voted on March 23 to reconfigure into an alignment that will include four K-4 campuses, the board decided to hold off Callaghan on deciding which school year for the start of that alignment. Monday, the board could end up finishing the second half of that decision. The agenda for Monday’s regular meeting, to be held at 6:30 p.m. in Woodrow Wilson Elementary School gymnasium, includes a discussion/ action item regarding the reconfiguration timeline.

The new alignment won’t take effect any earlier than the start of 201617 school year. However, the board could also decide to push back reconfiguration until the massive project of rebuilding the Berg Complex is complete. The board voted in January to pursue a new build of the complex, but no further action happened as the district wrestled with reconfiguration ideas. The March 23 plan chosen by the board calls for Berg’s elementary wing to change from current grades K-3 population to grades 5 and 6. The middle-school side of Berg will remain grades 7 and 8. The Berg Complex is on Monday’s agenda as a separate action item. Dave Briden of Frevert, Ramsey & Kobes Architects & Engineers is scheduled to be at Monday’s meeting, and the action item is whether to have FRK proceed with conceptual drawings for the new Berg facility.
