Warden named for Newton Correctional Facility By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News The Iowa Board of Corrections appointed a new warden to the Newton Correctional Facility on Friday morning at its regular meeting. Kristine K. Weitzell, who had only been the warden of the Fort Dodge Correction Facility since early September, was appointed by the board Friday to run the Newton medium- and minimum-security sites. The move comes about one month after the retirement of the top two Newton prison officials,
warden Terry Mapes and deputy warden Jill Dursky. Weitzell has extensive adm i n i s t r at i v e corrections experience with proven leadWeitzell ership in the management, supervision and treatment of adult offenders, according to DOC spokesperson Fred Scaletta. She was the superintendent of the Clarinda Correctional
Facility for about 18 months before being moved to Fort Dodge last fall, when James McKinney was moved from Fort Dodge to fill the vacant warden position at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center in Coralville. Friday’s announcements did not include any mention of Newton’s deputy warden position. Weitzell will continue to focus on the department’s mission to advance successful offender reentry to protect the public, staff and offenders from victimization, Scaletta said. The minimum-security east
campus of the Newton facility, known as the Newton Correctional Release Center, is typically one of the last stops for inmates serving medium-length or short sentences and who are approaching their release dates, with off-site work detail privileges and programming such as Puppy Jake service-dog training. Mapes and Dursky announced their resignations shortly before a pair of recent inmate escapes at Newton. A Jan. 23 escape by a single inmate, along with a pair of inmates getting away on Feb. 27.
Has Dakota Access jumped the gun?
These led to a public statement and subsequent rally by the union that represents corrections employees, calling for higher staffing levels around the state. According to the Iowa Department of Administrative Services, Weitzell made about $131,000 in fiscal 2015. She has also been involved with the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics for several years. Contact Jason W. Brooks at 641-792-3121 ext. 6532 or jbrooks@newtondailynews.com

IUB session Monday to address permit stipulations By Mike Mendenhall Newton Daily News DES MOINES — The Iowa Utilities Board will return to open session at 1:30 p.m. Monday to discuss progress of Dako-
ta Access, LLC in meeting additional permit requirements for the construction of the 346-mile Iowa stretch of a four-state crude oil pipeline. The meeting will follow up on Thursday’s board decision to
investigate reports that Dakota Access has begun clearing land designated for the pipeline’s construction — an action that could violate the regulatory board’s orders. Thursday’s meeting was in response to landowner reports which allege workers contracted by the Texas-based pipeline company have begun posting
No running, no touching, no hovering — those were the rules for the Newton All-Star team Friday night as they took on the Monroe Mustangs Granny Basketball team for the third annual YMCA fundraiser at Berg Middle School. The Mustangs showed off their experience early on and held a prominent lead for most of the game. They made layup after layup and scored points from the free throw line off many fouls on the AllStars. The All-Stars held on until late in the game when a change in the rules made it anybody’s game, and the Mustangs prevailed, capped by a last second shot to win 46-42. The fun, spirited and comical Granny Basketball Game was the kickoff for the Newton YMCA’s Annual Support
Campaign to raise money for people in need. More than 160 people attended at the event which raised at least $2,015, according to Newton YMCA Associate Executive Director Rhonda Robson. Through this financial assistance, the Y can offer help in the areas of child care, summer camp, programs like swim lessons, swim team and youth sports and it even helps with YMCA memberships. “As an organization committed to strengthening our community, not only do we offer financial assistance, we strive to keep our membership and programming fees low and allows us to engage more community members and make a real difference right here in the city of Newton and Jasper County,” Robson said.
