alling all superheros — the Defenders of Play 5K Fun Run wants you. To celebrate the Week of the Young Child and help raise money for Iowa’s homeless youth and the food bank at Grace Church in Newton, Loving Hands Daycare is hosting a 5K fun run at 9 a.m. April 16 at Agnes Patterson Park. “We’ve noticed how popular races have been, and we wanted to have something unique to help raise money for Iowa Homeless Youth Center and food for the food bank at Grace Church,” organizer Alicia Weithers said. “When looking to set up a date, we wanted to find something that was meaningful to our program and the Week of the Young Child just had to be the day.” This is the first race event for the daycare to help raise funds for the charities that are near and dear to them. “Our daycare has been supporting Iowa Homeless Youth for the last two years through

their big fundraiser Reggie’s Sleep Out, by having bake sales and sleeping under the stars. We’ve been supporting the Grace Church food bank for years by collecting cans throughout the year,” Weithers said. Anyone is invited to participate in the run, including man’s best friend and all are encouraged to wear costumes of their favorite superhero. There will be a contest for the best costume for adults, children and pets. “With the push for academic learning getting younger and younger, we feel that we need to defend play as the best way for children to learn. Our program feels they are defenders of play, and we wanted to share our passion with others.” Weithers said. “Our plan is to have play stations aka Super Hero Training Camps to showcase what children learn through play.” Registration for adults is $25 and includes a Defenders of Play T-shirt while children 12 and under are $10 with the children receiving a superhero cape. Forms are available at Sombrero’s and can be returned

to the restaurant or mailed to 107 Birdland Drive, Lambs Grove, IA 50208. Registration deadline is April 4. Information is also available on Facebook under Defenders of Play 5K/ Fun Run. On-site registration will be open the day of the event at 8:30 a.m., $15 for adults with no shirt and $10 for children with a super hero cape while supplies last. Those who attend are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items for Grace Food Bank. Fareway will be donating water for the event and Culver’s will have frozen custard at the end of the race. “We know people are so busy, but we are hoping the community will come out and give us their support,” Weither said. For those unable to participate but who would like to donate to the cause, donations can be sent to Loving Hands Daycare. Contact Jamee A. Stations of the Cross

The second prisoner who left the Newton Correctional Release Center last month has been captured by authorities. Fred Scaletta of the Iowa Department of Corrections confirmed Friday morning Michael Amodeo, 27, is in custody after being apprehended late Wednesday afternoon at an undisclosed location. Amodeo and Jessy Foley escaped from the minimum-security Newton facility Feb. 27. Both were missing that night during a routine count of inmates. Foley, 30, was apprehended by the Fifth Judicial District Warrant Team and the United States Marshal’s Service earlier this week, the department said. He and Amodeo are now incarcerated in more secure conditions,

He was serving a 27-year sentence that began in 2004, while Amodeo’s 10-year sentence began last August. The department did not release any information on where or how the two men were recaptured. Heartsill has two opponents in House District 28 race By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News Iowa Rep. Greg Heartsill won’t have an opponent in the June 7 primary for the House District 28 seat. However, the Columbia-area representative will face a challenger from the Democratic party in November’s general election. Lois DeWaard, of Pleasantville, and Marty Duffy, of

Knoxville, have filed paperwork for the June 7 primary for the District 28 seat. Heartsill, the incumbent who was first elected to the Legislature in 2012, is seeking a third term in office. District 28 encompasses a large portion of southern Jasper County, along with other southern Iowa counties. DeWaard lists her occupation as an “animal communicator and transformational life coach.” Duffy is a Social Studies teacher at Knoxville High School. HEARTSILL | 3A
