Kelley to seek re-election to House
Newton WaterWorks strives to keep water safe, clean
By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News Iowa Rep. Dan Kelley (D-Newton) announced Wednesday he will seek re-election House District 29, which includes about half of Jasper County. “We have made good progress in Iowa, but I believe there’s more we can do to help working families,” Kelley said. “We need to raise the minimum wage, help families with the high cost of child care and make public schools our top priority again.” District 29 includes all of Kelley Newton plus Prairie City, Colfax, Mingo, Baxter and Kellogg. Kelley, who was first elected to the House in 2010, is currently serving his third term in the Iowa House. He serves on the

lean water isn’t something most people think twice about. Grab a glass, turn on the faucet and get a drink. Until the clean water crisis in Flint, Mich. Marty Hoffert, director of field operations at Newton WaterWorks and L.D. Palmer, manager of the Newton WaterWorks, discussed the issues in Flint and why Newton residents have the safe, clean water they do. “Water doesn’t have lead in it, but if you don’t maintain the characteristics of your water so it doesn’t want to leach lead off of pipes, then you can pick up lead,” Hoffert said. That was the underlying issue of Flint’s problems when they decided to switch the water supply from the city of Detroit to using the Flint River. According to Environmental Protection Agency, the major concern from a public health standpoint was the absence of corrosion control treatment for mitigating lead and copper level in the drinking water. “They didn’t do any corrosion control at all, so the water was corrosive and actually leached the lead from all of the fixtures as well as the protective coating on all of the pipes. Then the lead in pipes was exposed to the water and leached off, which is what the people drank,” Hoffert said. “Their water is acid, leaches or eats the stuff off of the inside of the water features or if there is an old lead pipe going into the house, leached off of it.”

Footgolf addition in the Newton Airport gets works for Westwood $73,000 grant By Kate Malott Newton Daily News Newton Park Board members Amanda Price, Jim Klier and Marc Jackson discussed two new activities at its Newton Park Board meeting Wednesday night at city hall. The addition of a future footgolf course at Westwood Golf Course and a possible Gaga Ball pit at Aurora Park were both presented. Footgolf at Westwood Newton Parks Administrative Superintendent Nathan Unsworth presented the board with his idea to install a footgolf course at Westwood. The reason for this addition would be to increase revenue and to bring new people to the course. Footgolf is like golf played with a soccer ball, similar to disc golf. Popular in the eastern United States, its a sport growing in popularity because it combines golf and soccer and is inexpensive. A footgolf course would target adults ages 18 to 35 and families, Unsworth said.
There are a few courses in Iowa including Davenport and Muscatine. Muscatine course staff said they had 1,200 rounds of footgolf played there last year, Unsworth said. One of the rules of Unsworth footgolf is it has to be on a golf course which would limit it to Westwood. “Professional Golfers Association is working with a lot of different incentives to help increase golf numbers because they are declining as a sport nationwide right now, and this is the one thing that has proven to bring more people out to the course or back to the course,” Unsworth said. “The PGA has been supportive.” There are challenges with a footgolf course in Newton. Terrain and complexity of Westwood is one challenge, but most importantly is how it will work with current Westwood golf members. PARKS | 3A
By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News A $73,000 federal grant has been awarded to Newton Municipal Airport Earl Johnson Field. The airport will receive the money from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration grant program. The funding will be used to update the airport master plan narrative report and airport layout plan to address key issues, objectives and goals pertinent to the airport’s future development. April 2015. “Master planning involves contractor services and a fair amount of engineering, using slope curves and those sorts of calculations,” Nasalroad said. “We need to have a 20-year plan. It doesn’t
mean we’re necessarily going to do everything in the plan, but if we move forward on, say, a new crosswind runway, it would already be sequenced into a master plan.” AIRPORT | 7A
