Lynnville-Sully teacher headed to NYC for national honor Kevin Johnson among nine U.S. teachers to win 2016 award By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News Over the past five years, Kevin Johnson has spent an awful lot of time talking about an event in New York City. This week, he’s finally set to go there. Johnson, along his wife, Sara, are scheduled to travel to New York this week so he can receive one of the nine 9/11 Tribute Center Teaching Awards. The certificate of merit he’ll receive acknowledges his hard work over the past five years on leadership units the language arts teacher has conducted with Lynnville-Sully students regarding the events

of 9/11. The award also entails a $500 grant to Lynnville-Sully Schools to further programs that teach about the significance of 9/11. Johnson “It’s a little different, going to the site of tragedy to get an award,” Johnson said. “But it’s really about the kids, and teaching them about the impact of events. There are a lot of personal stories involved that won’t usually be in textbooks.” The 9/11 Tribute Center is a visitors center opened in 2006 by the September 11th Families Association, a nonprofit corporation that helps connect family members of lost loved ones, survivors, first responders and people who live and work in lower Manhattan. It has walking tours, exhibits and

programs linking visitors who want to understand and appreciate the historic events with those who experienced them. For the past five years, Johnson has helped link Lynnville-Sully eighth-graders to not only the 2,973 people killed in the attacks, but also the unprecedented rescue and recovery operations, survivors and the spirit of support, patriotism and generosity that arose nationwide in late 2001 and in 2002. Some of the elements of Johnson’s leadership unit have involved preparing his students to interview key figures from the 9/11 attacks. One of those figures is Allison Crowther, the mother of former Boston College lacrosse player and World Trade Center equities trader Welles Crowther, whose selfless actions saved the lives of at least six people before he died in a tower collapse. 9/11 | 3A

Race fans and music lovers will come together at Iowa Speedway for three weekends of entertainment this summer. The Speedway has announced the full NAPA Auto Parts Concert Series lineup, featuring three dynamic acts at the Pork Party Pavilion, complementing eight thrilling races on the 7/8-mile oval. The lineup includes Buckcherry, Eric Paslay and Snake Oil. “The NAPA Auto Parts Concert Series is a really fun benefit that we provide to our guests to enhance the fan experience,” said Iowa Speedway President Jimmy Small. “The concerts have become a very important part of each event weekend. We received an overwhelmingly positive response from our fans when we brought back concerts each weekend last season at the Pork Party

Pavilion.” The NAPA Auto Parts Concert Series kicks off on June 18, when party-rock act Buckcherry, takes center stage. The Los Angeles-based group will perform following the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series 200. The following day, the Speedway hosts the only NASCAR XFINITY Series race scheduled on a Sunday in 2016. Country singer and songwriter Eric Paslay will keep fans cheering following the conclusion of the ARCA Racing Series 150, presented by Casey’s General Stores, on July 9. Paslay will hit the Pork Party Pavilion, overlooking Turn 4, after the checkered flag is waved. The INDYCAR Series will speed things up the following day with the 10th running of the Iowa Corn 300, as INDYCAR’s stars solidify Iowa Speedway’s claim as the “Fastest Short Track on the Planet.” Snake Oil, a rock tribute band, will close out the NAPA Auto Parts Concert Series in style on July 29. NCSD board Outdoors Without Boundaries Banquet is Saturday hears audit More than 100 report items available Board members praised, cautioned on various fund balances By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News Michael Stanley’s task for Monday’s regular Newton Community School District Board of Education meeting was tough — but not super tough. Stanley, a CPA from Hunt & Associates, P.C., made a brief presentation at the meeting on behalf of the Knoxville firm. He acknowledged he was handing board members a bound number-filled report with a great deal of information. He handed each board member a

copy of the report, going over some highlights of each fund balance. The board unanimously voted to receive the audit report. School districts are required to have annual audits, and Newton Schools had used Nolte, Cornman and Johnson, of Newton, as its auditor for the past 12 years before awarding a new threeyear contract to Hunt & Associates last spring.
