By Bob Eschliman Daily News Editor A former Newton doctor who was facing hundreds of years in federal prison for more than 100 counts of illegal dispensing of controlled substances, as well as charges of health care fraud and illegal dispensing of controlled substances resulting in death, will likely go to prison for a small fraction of that time after pleading guilty to two of the charges Friday in U.S. District Court.

Altman earns Toastmasters awards By Daily News Staff

Skiff Medical Center Chief Operating Officer Brett Altman was recently honored by iSPEAK Toastmasters in Newton for his achievement in the field of leadership. Altman completed both the Competent and Advanced Leadership curricula by completing 10 comprehensive projects as well as other advanced requirements to earn his coveted status. He was awarded the certifications at a recent club meeting. This after former Iowa GOP Co-Chairman David Fischer announced last week he would no longer seek the nomination. Fischer cited an undisclosed new opportunity for his sudden reversal.

Skiff Medical Center CEO Steve Long has announced the appointment of Sheryl Tilus as Skiff ’s new chief nursing officer, effective last month. Tilus comes to Skiff with both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing. Her nursing leadership in-
cludes experience as the CNO for Cox Medical Center in Branson, Mo., and St. Edward Mercy Health System in Ft. Smith, Ark. She also served for eight years as CNO for Ottumwa Regional Health Center. Tilus’s career in nursing began in 1988 as a staff nurse at Dickey County Memorial Hospital in Ellendale, N.D., prior to becoming the Director of Acute Care Nurs-
ing Services at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls, Minn. She has earned certification as an Advanced Nursing Administrator with the American Nurses Credentialing Center and is also a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives. CNO See Page 5A
