Skiff Medical Center Chief Executive Officer Steve Long will be at the Newton City Council Meeting tonight to discuss the future of the hospital. The agenda includes discussion of a resolution that will further define the relationship between Skiff and the City of Newton. According to City Administrator Bob Knabel’s report to councilors, city staff is recommending adoption of the resolution, which is drafted to give the Skiff Board of Trustees “complete
support to explore all options” to ensure the hospital remains open. “Newton needs a hospital,” Long said. “We are doing everything we can to ensure there’s a hospital in Newton for the long term.” Skiff has a number of options to gain financial support to remain open. Among them are joining an Affordable Care Organization, such as CoOpertunity Health, or a healthcare system, such as Unity Point, and changing from a city hospital to a county hospital. “Anything is an option for the future, but its way too premature to make a de-
termination at all,” Long said. Skiff would benefit financially from any of the options. Should it seek to become a county hospital — which would allow the Board of Trustees to levy a tax upon the citizens of Jasper County — there would first have to be referendum election. “Becoming a county hospital is an option, but we have not approached that option,” Long said. It has been nearly a week since Newton citizens were introduced to “Get To Know Newton.” City of Newton Management Analyst Natalie Umsted, the face behind the new branding effort, is thrilled with the response. “I have been ecstatic about the community response to our new campaign and really happy with how things have been running on social media, as well as the responses I have got from people in person,” Umsted said. “I have heard a lot of good things and also some comments on where we

can improve and how we can extend how we’re using the brand, which is great feedback to get.” In the past week, Umsted has been introducing the brand to community groups in Newton. “I have been able to give a couple of additional presentations,” Umsted said. “I spoke at the Kiwanis Club on Wednesday at their noon meeting. I spoke at the Chamber breakfast on Thursday, so I have been able to have a couple additional outreach points and people seem very excited.” NEWTON See Page 5A

Last Tuesday, Representatives from Prairie City, the Prairie City Economic Development Corporation and the Jasper County Economic Development Corporation gave the Jasper County Board of Supervisors a quick overview of their annexation plans for the
city and this Tuesday, they will formally submit a resolution for the board to vote on. The resolution states: “The annexation application was voluntary and appears to serve the public purpose in that a portion of the real estate involved is dedicated to the City cemetery with another portion involved currently owned
