Museum to host Brown Bag Lunch Wednesday

Iowa Sculpture Festival receives donation

The topic for Brown Bag Lunch and Learn at noon Wednesday at the Jasper County Historical Museum will be “Newton’s First and Worst Cyclone.” The tornado was on May 21, 1918, and literally ripped upper floors from factories and houses and barely missed the west side of the square. Unfortunately, the library’s microfilm collection is missing a number of Newton Daily News issues from that portion of 1918, including the May 22 articles recording the damage. Fortunately, the museum has an old, badly damaged May 22 issue that was pieced together and is now nearly complete. Historians were able to use the full paper for much of their research rather than relying on just the portions that have been included in anniversary and other special editions of the paper. A digital copy will be sent to the library for its records.

Also present from the festival board are Terri Ayers and Kimbra Korte. Bank employee are Brad Sammons, Don Poynter, Brian Buch and Alex Hicks.
