Iowa Renewable Fuels Summit highlights industry’s future
By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News
Leaders look to Trump for support By Justin Jagler Newton Daily News ALTOONA — Renewable fuels industry leaders brimmed mostly with optimism at the Iowa Renewable Fuels Summit on Tuesday. Iowa Renewable Fuels Association Executive Director Monte Shaw delivered an industry overview. He said the state of Iowa’s renewable fuels industry is uncertain but unrelenting. “We are ready to expand and bring cheaper, cleaner, home-grown fuels to the U.S. and world consumers,” Shaw said. Much of the summit’s discussion was focused on President Donald Trump’s new administration and its impact on ethanol and biodiesel. Shaw said uncertainty stems from some of Trump’s cabinet appointees because of their track records of opposing the Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS). However, Shaw noted that, “One year ago at this very conference, then-candidate Donald Trump pledged to pro-

Have you ever wondered what a firefighter does all day? Are you curious about how they fight fires and deal with hazardous materials? If so, then the Newton Fire Department 2017 Citizen Fire Academy is for you. The six-week course will delve into everything from the history of firefighting and hazardous materials response to actually fighting a fire in a staged fire scenario. Courses start on April 18 and are scheduled from 6 to 10 p.m. every Tuesday until a graduation ceremony and family picnic on May 23. “It is always nice when you can get people in who are interested in what you do and actually see what it is because it can be hard to explain,” Newton Firefighter and Paramedic Joe Coen said. Coen, who is organizing the academy, is excited to see the program grow in its second year and once again share the variety of work the department does every day. Those attending the academy will start the program by attending an orientation including introductions to those administering the academy, a history of the fire department and its function, a station tour and the opportunity to put on fire gear the professionals use every day. tect and defend the RFS.” The RFS was created in 2005 and mandates the integration of renewable fuels into the country’s gasoline. Rick Perry, Trump’s Secretary of Energy, was an opponent of the RFS while Governor of Texas. Rex Tillerson, Trump’s nominee for Secretary of State, has caused some anxiety for people in the renewable fuels industry because of his decade-long position as
CEO for oil giant ExxonMobil. Keynote speaker Bob Dinneen, President and CEO of the Renewable Fuels Association, spoke overwhelmingly positive of Trump and titled his summit speech “Making Ethanol Great Again.” Dinneen acknowledged Trump cabinet members, including Perry and Tillerson, and their potential threats to the RFS, but he said it was Trump’s administration
— not Perry’s or Tillerson’s. Dinneen said it will be refreshing to have a president who will fight for the renewable fuels industry. He cited Trump’s support of the RFS on the campaign trail and the president’s regulatory reform agenda. Dinneen said he looks forward to having a president who will put America first.
The Jasper Community Foundation is announcing its request for grant proposals for 2017. The Foundation recently received its County Endowment Fund Program award allocation from the State of Iowa to facilitate endowment building and grant making throughout Jasper County. The contribution to the Foundation was made possible by the Iowa General Assembly. Several years ago the Iowa legislature passed bills to encourage foundation building and community-based philanthropy. Among these measures was HF 2032 which provided that non-gambling counties, initiating a county-wide community foundation would be eligible to receive .08 percent of the state’s gross gambling tax receipts. In 2016, the Jasper Community Foundation disbursed $85,836 to 20 different nonprofit organizations throughout the county. These funds

Reading with Orion New therapy dog visits Newton Public Library weekly By Kayla Langmaid Newton Daily News Therapy dogs may come and go from the Newton Public Library, but the impact they have on young readers will always remain true. Cynthia Healy and her therapy dog Orion have been visiting the library since November, and they serve as expert listeners for children learning to read. Every Monday afternoon, Orion, a 12-year-old golden retriever, can be found in the children’s section of the library relaxing with his owner
Healy as they help children read books. Children’s librarian Phyllis Peter said Orion’s mellow and nurturing character puts children at ease. “It’s a great way for kids to make reading fun,” Peter said. “The word is definitely starting to get out now.” Peter said kids might feel self conscious when they read, and Orion will help ease their worries. Peter said the library has had at least two other therapy dogs in the past and when they moved away, the library DOG | 3A
