Twyner set to plead guilty on federal charges By Bob Eschliman Daily News Editor A former Newton doctor who was facing more than 100 federal charges of illegally dispensing narcotic painkillers and more than a half-dozen charges of health care fraud has signed a plea agreement with prosecutors.
Tuesday, U.S. District Court Judge Stephanie M. Rose set a change of plea proceeding for Lafayette James Twyner Jr., 64, to be held Friday, Feb. 21, at the U.S. District Courthouse in Des Moines. The nature of the plea agreement will not be known until it is accepted by the court. Twyner was previously cited July 26, 2012, by the Iowa Board of Medicine for
“engaging in a pattern of willful and repeated violations” of Iowa medical laws and procedures. He voluntarily surrendered his license to practice medicine and was ordered to pay a $10,000 civil penalty as part of an agreement with the board. TWYNER See Page 9A

Four seniors sent off with win
Firefighters and HazMat crews responded to a large fire Thursday that consumed much of the Janco Industries facility on the northwest corner of Sully. Around 9:13 a.m., workers going on break noticed a fire at the back of the building, and 911 was called. Fire departments from Sully, Lynnville, Reasnor, Kellogg Township and Newton responded to the scene. The cause of the fire is not yet known.

The Newton Employee Relations Committee met Thursday night and approved a recommendation to create a development specialist position. City Administrator Bob Knabel gave an in-depth look at the development specialist. The committee’s recommendation must now go before the Newton City Council for approval. The third floor of the Jasper County Courthouse will be a little busier than usual Monday with four felony cases having pretrial conferences that day. All four are scheduled to go to trial in February or the first first week of March. Jena Wright Jena Wright, 25, is facing charges of child endangerment causing death, a Class B felony, and neglect or abandonment of a child in her care, a Class C felony, in connection with an April 22, 2013, incident in which 4-year-old Jordyn Arndt was mauled by Wright’s dog at her Prairie City home. Wright was babysitting Jordyn and her brother at the time of the incident. COURTS See Page 9A

As a high school junior, a wideeyed, 16-year-old Nancy Hoen went to work for the first time in the Jasper County Recorder’s Office to work a summer job. It’s hard to imagine that girl, who grew up to become Jasper County Recorder Nancy Parrott would be looking back this week upon a career in that very same office that has spanned more than 40 years. She announced publicly Thursday morning this will be her last year leading the office she transformed.
