First legislative coffee set for Saturday Three events allow for legislator statements, Q&A By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News

Jason W. Brooks/Daily News FRK Architect & Design Rachelle Haines makes a presentation at Monday night’s Newton Community School District Board of Education meeting. The district agreed to spend more than $830,000 for upgrades and changes to Emerson Hough, but many are environmental and not related to converting it back into a regular school.

Emerson Hough to get much needed upgrades HVAC, other changes part of reconfiguration process By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News Emerson Hough is getting some expensive, much needed work done — and it isn’t simply because the building is going back to its intended purpose. The building, which was used as a school from when it opened in 1926 until it was closed to save money in 2010, will be one of the Newton Community School District’s four K-4 elementary schools beginning in 201617. Just in time for full days of housing about 275 students and their teachers and other faculty, the building will receive a full replacement of its heating and cooling system, which were approved by the board of education at Monday’s regular meeting. The meeting, held in Emerson Hough’s conference room, was

where the board voted to spend about $834,000 in SAVE funds on Emerson Hough upgrades. Less than $90,000 of that money will be used for adjustments that will convert Emerson Hough back into an everyday school, while $750,000 will be used for planned improvements to the building. “We would be doing these upgrades anyway, no matter what’s happening with the building,” maintenance supervisor Jack Suttek said. “We have six rooftop condenser (air conditioner) units that are all about 20 years old, and need to be replaced. That, along with the digital control system to go with it, could run us $400,000 to $500,000.” The motion was to allow FRK Architects & Engineers to design a basic plan for adjustments related to configuration,

along with accepting bids and contracting the major air-conditioning and any other utility work needed. Superintendent Bob Callaghan stressed that the amount approved is an authorized amount based on estimated costs, although bidding could lead to less than an $834,000 cost for the project. Monday’s vote was to appropriate about $660,000 for the HVAC system and controls. FRK intern architect Rachelle Hines made a presentation at Monday’s meeting about the work her firm will do, which includes schematic designs to accompany lockers, flooring, paint and other new aspects of Emerson Hough. Most of the work will be done in the late spring in early summer. “After we bring construction documents to the board on Feb. 8, we’ll have a bid date of March 3 and a contract award date of March 14,” Hines said. Jason W. Brooks/Daily News A man was transported to Skiff Medical Center after his Ford F-150 pickup truck collided with a single train engine Tuesday at the railroad crossing on West Fourth Street North near the former Maytag Plant I building. The crash happened just after 1 p.m. Newton Fire Chief Jerrod Wellik said it appears the crossing arm was down when struck by the F-150, which was then pushed into the arm standard. The driver, Duane Oswalt, 81, of Newton, had cuts or lacerations to his head; the injuries weren’t life-threatening.
