Newton teen Highway 117 near Colfax shut charged with down in Wednesday house fire sex abuse Newton Daily News A 17-year-old Newton student is charged with third-degree sexual abuse after a police investigation determined he sexually abused a 13-year-old victim. Joshua A. Hummel-Gulling is accused of inappropriately touching the victim, an eighth-grade student, in November 2016 when she was staying overnight at a friend’s house. Hummel-Gulling had been invited over to watch a movie and when the other friend fell asleep the alleged sexual abuse Hummel-Gulling occurred. A Newton Police Department report states Hummel-Gulling admitted to a sex abuse act but said he stopped “because he had a gut feeling it was bad.” Hummel-Gulling posted a $2,500 bond on Dec. 26. Third-degree sexual abuse is a Class C felony with a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.
City council addresses quality of life for animals By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News The Newton City Council has taken the next steps to improve the quality of life for animals by passing an amendment, which will among several items, defines the standard of care for domestic animals on Monday. Approved on the third reading, the ordinance amendment was created in partnership with the Newton Police Department and Jasper County Animal Rescue League to continue the city’s efforts of the past two years to ensure a high level of control and quality of life for animals in Newton. The amendments touch on three categories of the ordinance — standard of care, animals in motor vehicles and vicious and problematic dogs. ANIMALS | 3A

By Mike Mendenhall Newton Daily News COLFAX — A house fire south of Colfax forced crews to shut down north and southbound traffic on Highway 117 South Wednesday morning between Colfax and Prairie City. Crews from multiple fire departments and law enforcement agencies responded to the blaze at 605 Highway 117 S. According to Jasper County Sheriff Chief Deputy Duane
Rozendaal, no one was home when the fire began around 9:06 a.m. Rozendaal said it was initially reported as a fire in an attached garage, but due to the high winds Wednesday it quickly spread to the house and a nearby RV trailer. The homeowner arrived on scene at 9:45 a.m. A medical helicopter was dispatched to the scene, but investigators canceled the air ambulance when it was discovered the home was vacant.

The Jasper County Board of Supervisors gave the go ahead to a federal aid agreement on Tuesday to repave a portion of Highway F36, resulting in an estimated $2.7 million com-
ing to the county in funding. The 5.5 mile stretch of pavement, also known as the Ike’s road, is located west of Newton. Following a recent rating of county road conditions, F36 was found to be one of the worst. “It has been getting in really bad shape lately,” Jasper County Engineer Russ Stutt said. “It is breaking up and we’ve been doing excessive patching in areas.”

Search for missing rescued war dog continues
Jack Gdeshka is a dog with an extraordinary story. He was born on a foreign operating base in Afghanistan and raised by Canadian and American soldiers. Jathan Chicoine was one of the soldiers who patrolled with Jack overseas. When Chicoine returned to rural Iowa, northeast of Ames near the Skunk River Greenbelt, he rescued Jack and took the war dog home with him. Jack went missing on Dec. 5. Since his disappearance, he traveled at least 40-plus miles. The last confirmed sighting
Colfax Fire Department was the first emergency personnel on scene. Prairie City police and fire, Baxter Police and fire Newton Fire Department, Iowa State Patrol, Jasper County Sheriff ’s Office and Alliant Energy all assisted at the scene. No one was injured in the fire, but the Prairie City police chief was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.
