Local investors purchase former Newton Manufacturing building By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News The former Newton Manufacturing building is set to have new owners pending a Dec. 4 closing date on the sale of the building. Newton Elite Properties, LLC comprised of Julie Prendergast, Rick Roush and Josh and Becky Firkins will take over ownership of the 37,000 square foot building, 1123 First Ave. E., with plans to lease the space. “We’re going to buy it and lease it out,” Prendergast said. “We’ll section it out so it isn’t

such a big space. We’ve got lots of ideas it just depends on what works out with those ideas.” Prendergast said the group looked at buying the building about a year ago, but it didn’t work out. More recently, the group has been working to finalize an agreement to take ownership of the property which boasts more than 3.7 acres. “It is a great building, it is solid. I hated to see anybody tear it down,” she said. “We are super excited to have this kind of an icon building and bring it back to life.”

The building was planned to go up for auction in September with a low minimum bid of $225,000 required, but no viable bids were received. Prendergrast declined to release the sale price prior to closing. Newton Manufacturing, the company who was previously housed on the property, declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy in June 2015 and the company was then purchased by HALO Branded Solutions of Sterling, Ill.

NHS student named as National Hispanic Merit Scholar

NPD warns about latest IRS phone scam Newton Daily News

David Dolmage/Daily News David Lopez-Sanders addresses members of the Newton Community School District’s board as they recognize him for his achievement during a board meeting. After taking the PSAT this fall Lopez-Sanders was recognized as a National Hispanic Merit Scholar, an honor awarded to the top 2.5 percent of students who took the test.

By David Dolmage Newton Daily News When the letter first showed up in his mailbox it looked like just another piece of college junk mail. As a senior at Newton High School, David Lopez-Sanders has been buffeted by a daily stream of flyers, bro-

chures and literature from colleges around the country, but when he opened the envelope he was surprised to learn he’d been selected as a National Hispanic Merit Scholar, one of the top 2.5 percent of Hispanic students who took the PSAT test. “I didn’t even know that this existed, I thought it was just

a piece of college spam,” Lopez-Sanders said. As a high school senior getting ready for college Lopez-Sanders had already taken the ACT, a college preparatory exam that’s commonly used by many colleges and universities SCHOLAR | 3A

The Newton Police Department has received numerous reports of individuals receiving threatening calls from persons claiming to be representing the IRS. In this scam, the caller claims he or she represents the IRS. The caller demands immediate payment and tells recipients to use a credit card, debit card or pre-paid debit card, such as a Green Dot card. Callers threaten recipients with court actions or even immediate arrest if they don’t pay immediately. The caller likely “spoofs” the number that appears on caller-ID displays, meaning the display may mask the true number and falsely display an actual or claimed IRS number. According to the IRS, it does not place calls demanding immediate payment and sends notices to taxpayers through the U.S. Mail. If you receive such a call, hang up. If you want to take an extra step to ensure you really don’t owe federal back taxes or penalties, call the

IRS directly to verify. How to Report an IRS Scam • Victims who lost money through an IRS scam should report the loss to local law enforcement. • Victims who were not scammed but who wish to report it can contact the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) through the FTC Complaint Assistant at ftccomplaintassistant.gov. • Those who want to verify whether they owe federal taxes or penalties should contact the IRS directly. The IRS telephone assistance number is 1-800-829-1040. • Those who were not scammed but who wish to report being contacted by an IRS impersonator can report it to the U.S. Treasury Inspector General for Taxpayer Administration (TIGTA): www. treasury.gov/tigta or, tollfree, at 1-800-366-4484. Contact Iowa Attorney General Office by email at consumer@ag.iowa. gov or at 515-281-5926 or 888-777-4590 (outside of the Des Moines metro area).

Goldfinch Growth expanding housing opportunities in Newton By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News With a housing shortage well documented in Newton, the addition of high-quality rental units is more than welcome to the community. Goldfinch Growth real estate firm is doing just that at The Chamberlain apartment building with four new residences. An open house was

held to view a remodeled unit at the building on Wednesday. To date, Goldfinch Growth, which is co-owned by Natalie Umsted and Bryan Friedman, has completed one unit at the complex. Umsted said the goal is to have all four ready for renters by early 2018. “Our goal is to take some high quality rental housing and elevate it to premium rental housing

in Newton,” Umsted said. “We have heard that is a need. We’re trying to fill that need.” The building, located at 207 W. Third St. S., was built in 1966 by Curly and Lois Chamberlain as a place to spend their retirement. The apartments were designed to be large, high quality rentals when they were constructed in HOUSING | 3A
