ICubs grounds crew builds NHS softball field By David Dolmage Newton Daily News

When the voice whispered to Ray Kinsella, “If you build it, he will come,” he knew exactly where to go to get the best advice about building a baseball field in the middle of his Iowa farm in the movie “Field of Dreams.” Kinsella, played by Kevin Costner, went to the Cubs groundskeepers to figure out how to build the best field — Newton Community School District Athletic Director Scott Garvis had the same idea. The district’s new softball field, which is nearing completion is being constructed by the Iowa Cubs Sports Turf, the same em-

ployees who work on the field at Principal Park in Des Moines. After meeting Casey Scheidel, the president of Iowa Cubs Sports Turf last spring at the Iowa Athletic Director’s convention, Garvis knew he was the right man for the job. Scheidel’s experience maintaining one of the best minor league parks in the country meant he knew exactly what the district needed to build a great facility of their own. “They do incredible work. They do just about anything,” Garvis said. Scheibel, who describes himself as an “Iowa farm boy” went to college at Iowa State University. He always knew this was what

YMCA to host inaugural Family Fall Festival Trunk-or-Treat to be featured By Kayla Singletary Newton Daily News It’s not uncommon to welcome autumn by browsing a pumpkin patch for the perfect size pumpkin. During the Newton YMCA’s Family Fall Festival, attendees will have to take a dive into the facility’s pool to retrieve their pumpkins. YMCA staff are gearing up for the event, which will include trunk-or-treat, a bounce house, Von Air balloon artist extraordinaire and hayrack rides. Members of the YMCA and their families and friends are invited to attend the fall festival from 6 to 8 p.m. Robson Friday. “Families can swim to get their pumpkin,” Rhonda Robson, Associate Executive Director said. “They have the opportunity to paint them and there will be pumpkin races in the pool.” Area businesses and community members who signed up to decorate their trunks for the event will dress up in costumes and hand out candy. he wanted to do with his life, and after graduating with a degree in horticulture, he took a job with the Colorado Rockies organization for three years, working on Coors Field in Denver. When an opportunity with the ICubs came open, Scheidel jumped at the chance to move closer to home in 2006. For years, the ICubs have fielded requests from local high school schools asking them for help building and maintaining their fields, and it wasn’t long before the business started to grow. Supervisors approve safety measure for accident-prone corner By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News Two flashing beacons will be added to Highway T22S near the curve in Killduff following an outpouring of concern. The Jasper County Board of Supervisors approved the addition after hearing from several Killduff residents on Tuesday. Supervisor Doug Cupples added the topic to the previous meeting agenda because of feedback about the safety of the area, named Killduff corner, and asked the county engineer to bring options for further signage for the board to review. “We looked into additional warning beacons. We ordered those beacons and they will probably be in around the end of the month,” county engineer Russ

Stutt said. “Once they come in, we will place those to hopefully help reduce the speeds.” The beacons will be flashing lights placed on the speed limit signs for both northbound and southbound traffic. They will be solar powered with six hours of charging time lasting approximately three days. The beacons will also be fitted with a secure lock to prevent theft. Jasper County Chief Deputy Duane Rozendaal said following the discussions last week, he pulled records dating back to January 2015 for the corner. In that time, there were seven reported motor vehicle incidents from both the northbound and southbound lanes. “Each one of them, every one of them as a SAFETY | 3A

Pumpkins, painted: Inaugural Art Night brings families together By David Dolmage Newton Daily News As families streamed into the gymnasium at Emerson Hough Elementary on Tuesday night Nicki Hornbaker couldn’t have been happier. The first Fall Art Night, organized by Hornbaker and fellow art teacher Katie Craney was a hit. A crowd comprised of 173, including students, their parents, and their siblings turned out for the first of two art nights this year. The second art night, scheduled for April 17 will feature a tie-dye theme, but Tuesday was all about the pumpkins. The two art teachers, who each split time between Newton’s elementary schools wanted to create an event that would bring children from all four schools to-
