City election candidate forum set for Oct. 26 By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News Citizens of Newton will have the opportunity to hear from each candidate running for city office at an upcoming candidate forum. Starting at 7 p.m. Oct. 26, the forum, sponsored by the Jasper County League of Women Voters and

Newton Daily News, will take place at Newton City Hall in council chambers with all candidates on hand. “This is really important to the election and I am really pleased that the candidates are willing to participate,” coordinator Bonnie Pitz said. The forum will begin with the two mayoral candidates,

incumbent Newton Mayor Mike Hansen and challenger Ron Bookout. Following the mayoral forum, candidates vying for the open at-large city council seat will take the stage. The candidates include councilwoman Evelyn George, Garfield Berndt III, Lance C. Hawley, Matthew Holmes and Russell Terlouw.

Also on the ballot are Dean Stonner who is running unopposed for the Ward 2 seat and incumbent councilman Steve Mullan who is also running unopposed for re-election to the Ward 4 position. The uncontested candidates do not participate in the forum. Each candidate will be

Artists young, old share love for art at Iowa Sculpture Festival By Anthony Victor Reyes Newton Daily News From drawing rambunctious “Despicable Me” Minions to painting a rock her favorite color, 4-year-old Michaela Cushatt’s “concentration face” was impossible to miss if you were passing by the kids craft room at the Iowa Sculpture Festival. With her mouth slightly open and eyes glued to her work space, the young artist spent a good 10

minutes crafting her latest masterpieces. “(Art) is fun because I like it,” the 4-year-old said. “I painted my rock purple and pink. Purple is my favorite color.” After sketching with her twin sister, Joslynn, the emerging artist spent the rest of her Sunday banging on a set of African drums with Ezra, her 1-year-old brother and checking out the work of other artists. $2.75 million in Hotel Maytag funds now loan, not grant By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News To increase scoring potential on a tax credit program application for the redevelopment of the former Hotel Maytag, the City of Newton has agreed to convert the grant installments previously approved for the project to a loan agreement. City council approved the change in a special meeting on Friday.

In the original development agreement, $2.75 million in grant funds and property tax incentives were allocated in five installments to the renovation of Hotel Maytag by the Hotel Maytag Investors group, headed by Hatch Development Group. The first two installments, in the amounts of $60,000 and $100,000 each, were paid upon approval of GRANT | 3A
