NCSD to consider adding five Final plat, streets paras for special education named at Cardinal Ridge subdivision By David Dolmage Newton Daily News
The Newton Community School District board will consider hiring an additional five paraprofessionals to meet the needs of special education students in the district at its Monday meeting. After meeting with special education teachers and administrators during a work session on Sept. 25, teachers delivered a clear message to the board — they need more help. During the work session, teachers told the board they needed extra help to close the gap between special education students and their peers. Berg Middle School special education teacher Lucinda Sinclair said the paraprofessionals in the district are working as hard as they can, but they need additional help. “Our paras are working their tails off, there’s no time in their day,” Sinclair said. “We’re trying the best that we can, but we’re still short, we need help.” After meeting with principals from each school in the district Superintendent Bob Callaghan said administrators believe the district needs to add five additional paraprofessionals. Under the proposal, the district would add two new employees at Berg Middle School, and one each at Emerson Hough, Thomas Jefferson and Aurora Heights. The average salary for a para-
Former land owner say he was ‘left out of the loop’ on project By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News The final plat for the Cardinal Ridge subdivision at the former Newton County Club is approved and street names have been selected. The street on the north end of the subdivision will be called Cardinal Ridge Drive, while South Seventh Avenue West was approved on the first reading of the ordinance change. More than $907,000 in city bond proceeds were used to pay Halbrook Excavating and Alliance Construction group to complete grading and utility installation and street paving for the subdivision on the 4.25 acres of land at the former country club. Bill Talsma, who sold the land to the city and is the current owner of the property surrounding the development, said he had a few concerns on the contractors calling the work complete. “There are several things that they haven’t finished up yet. I went over it with the Bolton & Menk project manager,” Talsma said. RIDGE | 3A

Interstate Insurance Services celebrates 35 years in Newton By Kayla Singletary Newton Daily News As Interstate Insurance Services celebrates 35 years of business in Newton, the agency’s owner reflects on his time serving the community. Dave Lureman, a Newton native, established the independent agency in 1983. Now with a new set of employees, Lureman said he is proud to see his business’s core principles being carried on with an additional owner. “I wanted to be in business for myself and the whole thing comes down to I wanted to give everyone I worked with the opportunity to have a job in a nice place — not at a large company,” Lureman said. Lureman and his wife, Paula, returned to the Newton area after deciding they wanted to raise kids in Iowa. The Luremans have witnessed many changes in the community and suffered a set back when Maytag left Newton. “We took our biggest hit when Maytag left for about three years but we fought back, and we are survivors,” Lureman said. “It’s been interesting and I’ve enjoyed my time here for nearly 40 years.” IIS is focusing on the future as it has established locations in Iowa Falls and State Center and has licenses in about 15 states. to a projected $389,000. District officials will also present an alternate plan to the board to increase the hours of existing paraprofessionals from 27.5 hours to 30 hours a week. Currently, there are 68 paraprofessionals in the district,
and 53 of them are parttime employees. Increasing the hours of existing employees would generate an additional 79.5 hours per week, as opposed to hiring five more paraprofessionals, NCSD | 3A
