Manufacturing company to invest $6M, add 57 new jobs at former Maytag Plant 2 By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News Global Fiberglass Solution, Inc., of Bothell, Wash., has selected the Maytag Plant 2 building for its fiberglass recycling operation and will invest $6 million and create 57 new jobs in the process.

“We’re pleased, we have been working with them for several months,” Newton Development Corporation Executive Director Frank Liebl said. “At first they were just going to make it a storage facility for the blades but after they saw the space they thought it was not only going

to be a great place to store but to manufacture.” The company plans to create an innovative processing and manufacturing facility in Newton using recycled materials, mostly fiberglass, from decommissioned wind blades and other products. Liebl said instead of the waste ending

up in landfills, the company repurposes the more than 15,000 pounds of fiberglass per blade into new, useful products including manhole covers, building panels and pellets. “It keeps the blades out of the landfills and repurposes everything,” Liebl said. “It is

really a wonderful company.” While GFS currently works with a company who takes down blades in Illinois and South Dakota, it is also starting to make connections with local companies that have fiberglass waste. MANUFACTURING | 3A

Phone use still an issue at Berg By David Dolmage Newton Daily News

Mike Mendenhall/Daily News Mary Madlcok of Norwalk, and Gina Scheetz-Lazio of West Des Moines, tour model tiny homes Saturday during TinyFest Midwest at the Jasper County Fairgrounds in Colfax. The two-day festival brought hundreds of visitors to Jasper County, some from as far as St. Louis and Indiana, to learn about tiny living.

Tiny home exhibitions shows homeowners how to live small By Mike Mendenhall Newton Daily News COLFAX — Lounging on a tiny couch, in a tiny living room, wearing a TinyFest Midwest T-shirt, Darren Mike knows a thing or two about tiny homes. Stepping through a sliding glass door onto a retractable

front porch, Mike explains the tiny house on display Saturday at the Jasper County Fairgrounds is the same model as the home owned by his family, designed by Des Moines-based tiny house company Built on the Fly. Drafted using 3-D imaging, the 200 square foot, 24-foot long house sits on a trailer rig, built

and constructed piece by piece like a puzzle in 72 hours. Mike said the manufacturer cuts electrical channels into the pieces. It can be designed to install solar panels, on board batteries and plumbing hook-ups. Mike and his wife Melody recently sold their 2,800 square foot home between Omaha and Lincoln, Neb. to live in two, 200 square foot trailers with their four kids and dog. The tiny TINY | 3A

As the school year gets underway, some students are feeling the pinch as new rules about cell phone us age take effect at B e r g Middle School. At the Langstraat school, v i c e principal Steph Langstraat said the policy change was motivated by staff concerns over social media issues. Previously, cell phones had been allowed on a case-by-case basis in the

classrooms, with some teachers incorporating them into classroom activities. Now, cell phones are only allowed during the three minute passing period between classes, and in the common areas like the cafeteria, during lunchtime. Langstraat estimated that more 95 percent of the student population at Berg has a cell phone. “We had lots of issues with cell phones and issues with social media last year that created a lot of angst and hurt,” Langstraat said. Under the new policy, students at Berg in grades 5-6 have a no phone policy, and teachers will confiscate cell PHONES | 8A
