NDC tapped for larger role in city economic development By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News The Newton Development Corporation is taking on a larger role in the community’s economic development sector. City council approved NDC to serve as the lead agency on half of the Newton community on industrial and commercial business recruitment and expansion. “This item is a part of the reorganization that we presented at the last meeting. We eliminated the department of economic development Muckler and the position of economic development director,” city administrator Matt Muckler said. “We’ve asked NDC to step up and take on a larger role in terms of economic development than they have done before. We will be asking NDC to be the lead agency on behalf of the Newton community when it comes Liebl to commercial and industrial development, whether it is expanding local businesses that are here now or working to bring in new business to Newton and expanding our tax base.” With the increased role, the corporation will also receive an additional $25,000 in TIF revenues to go along with the $75,000 already allocated for fiscal year 2017-2018. A portion of those funds, approximately $35,000, is slated to come from the 7 percent City of Newton Hotel/Motel Tax. Primary activities NDC will be expected to lead include helping retain the jobs currently located in Newton, provide expansion opportunities to local industry and business NDC | 3A

Republicans take aim at annual trap shoot event By David Dolmage Newton Daily News

The fourth annual Jasper County Republicans trap shooting fundraiser started off with a bang on Saturday morning as residents took aim at clay pigeons. The event, which gives residents a chance to meet and mingle with Republican representatives drew a crowd despite wet, rainy weather. Jasper County Republican chair Thad Nearmyer said the event, one of the group’s biggest fundraisers, is one the most important of the year. “We want to get people who are

excited about celebrating the Second Amendment,” Nearmyer said. While Nearmyer admitted he’s much more interested in sprint car racing than shooting, having the chance to take home a trophy for bragging rights is something that most folks can’t pass up. In recent years, the group has also added additional activities to the event to give it more of a tailgating feel to match the fall weather. Moo’s BBQ brought plenty of food, and attendees could listen to the Iowa State game on the radio between shotgun blasts. “It’s not my cup of tea at all, but

said city leaders knew they wanted to keep it going. Funds raised during Saturday night’s event will go right back into Quarry Park, Mast said.

“We want to get some income so that we can continue to make improvements to the park,” Mast said. Working around the rain, organizers de-

cided to set up for the concert in the indoor archery range, which had enough space to get concertgoers out of the ROCK | 3A

Have rusty junk? Well it could soon be rusty gold with the help of the TV show “American Pickers.” The popular cable show has announced it is searching for leads on locations for filming in Iowa during October. Filmed all over the U.S., “American Pickers” follows Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz from Antique Archeology as they work to find antiques and collectibles. The items are “picked” then sold in their stores located in LeClaire and Nashville, Tenn., or to private buyers. The pickers’ travels and finds are filmed and aired on the

History Channel. Wolfe, Fritz and team are looking for private collections in search of old advertising signage, motorcycle, bicycles made prior to 1960s, pinball and slot machines, vintage movie memorabilia, old rodeo items, pre-1940s telephones, Houdini items, sports memorabilia, vintage BB guns, pre1940s Christmas items, vintage gas pumps, strange woodcarvings and vintage collegiate collectibles among other things. More than 150 turn out for concert

COLFAX — The good times kept rolling in Colfax despite wet, rainy weather on Saturday night. More than 150 residents turned out to Rock the Quarry, an annual fundraiser for Colfax’s Quarry Park. Colfax Mayor David Mast said organizers decided to move the event indoors after looking at the weather forecast Saturday morning while setting up for the event, which featured several bands, a food truck and a beer garden. After holding the first event last September, Mast

the event’s such a good fundraiser we want to keep it going,” Nearmyer said. “It’s more than just shooting, people get a chance to visit with lawmakers too.” Several local Republican representatives were on hand, as well as a few hopefuls. Cedar Rapids mayor Ron Corbett, a Newton native and Republican candidate for governor, was one of several Republican candidates who made an appearance Saturday morning. Corbett, who’s been racking more than 1,000 miles a month as he campaigns for
