Driver hits Newton pedestrian, leaves scene Des Moines man arrested Newton Daily News

‘Hit ‘em hard’

Annual demo derby draws thousands to Colfax By Kayla Langmaid Newton Daily News COLFAX — Most motorsports events are centered around the goal of not colliding with other vehicles or igniting fires. The Colfax Demolition Derby, however, encourages both. Thousands of onlookers cheered and hollered during the Mineral Springs Days demo derby event Saturday night. Event organizers hauled out extra sections of bleachers at the Jasper County Fairgrounds and even that wasn’t enough seating space for all. Derby drivers traveled statewide to participate in the annual event, which began in 2008. Oth-

er drivers, like father-daughter duo Forest and Sadie Parks, traveled just down the road in their hometown to participate. Forest Parks has been participating in demolition derbies for 35 years. He is now able to say the car-smashing hobby is a family affair. The derby for Forest Parks on Saturday night was an abnormal one as he ended up overturning his car. “I got to going and ran into that station wagon and caught my wheel on it, drove up on it and rolled over,” Forest Parks said. “All my kids came running out there, thought their old man got hurt.” Forest Parks had no injuries

to report thanks to his seatbelt. In addition, the ride was special because of a certain decal on his car that was a tribute to his late mother. “Twenty-one days ago my mom passed away, and she loved going to the races with us,” Forest Parks said. “She raced gokarts, and I had number six on my car, which was her number with “KP” on the top of that.” That “KP” stood for Karen Parks. Forest Parks said she was a dedicated grandmother who loved to watch her grandchildren at the derby. Sadie Parks has been participating in derbies for three years, DERBY | 8A

By Kayla Langmaid Newton Daily News

United Way of Jasper County kicked off its campaign in a new style through an evening community event. To make the campaign official, around 150 attendees filtered in and out of the Newton DMACC/ Maytag Innovation Center and courtyard Saturday evening with food, beverages and music. The low-key atmosphere was a perfect opportunity for several local organizations and businesses to hand out information and make connections. Playing in the background was the band Time Will Tell from Grinnell and a grilled meal was catered by Hy-Vee. The 2018 campaign will run through Nov. 17, with a goal of $330,000. The money raised will be granted to area nonprofits who provide health and human service programs to Jasper County
