Newton Hy-Vee celebrating 10 years in new location By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News Serving the town for more than 60 years, Hy-Vee has become a well-known, reliable staple in Newton. The grocer will be celebrating its 10 year anniversary in its current location beginning the second week in September. “Hy-Vee has been part of the Newton Community since Feb. 1, 1954 and has been in

its current location since September 2007,” store manager Scott Pearson said. “We will be holding a 10 year anniversary sale the Pearson week of Sept. 11 with some incredible sales that will blow our customers away.”

Included in the sale are food samples inside and outside the store, carnival games for children, informational seminars on food and drinks, free product giveaways, gift card giveaways on Facebook, special visitors in the store and food and drink specials in the Market Grille Café just to name a few. The fall pumpkin patch will also be set up and ready for eager Halloween enthusiasts.

Bowlful of Blues to celebrate 25 years

“Mark it on your calendar to be at the Newton Hy-Vee the week of Sept. 11 and stay tuned for more information on our 10 year anniversary special,” Pearson said. Hy-Vee has been a strong supporter of the community during its time in Newton. In the past year, it has donated to more than 100 organizations in excess of $30,000. The store has been proud sponsors of numerous local events, clubs

and organizations and offer discounts to local businesses. The Newton Community School District has received donated meals for all Newton High School athletic banquets along with a $500 donation for a bus to take the NHS boys basketball team to the state tournament this year. What’s in a name? Partnership between the DNR and NHS students has the sweet smell of success By David Dolmage Newton Daily News Thanks to a collaborative effort between the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and a group of Newton High School students, a local landmark is getting a new identity. Earlier this year, Courtney Wolken’s AP Biology class filed to change the name of Sewer Creek to Cardinal Creek. This month, the application filed with the United States Geological Survey was approved, and new signs on Interstate 80 call attention to the creek’s new

nom de guerre. The former Sewer Creek, which starts just west of Newton High School and meets South Skunk River near Highway 14 serves Newton’s wastewater treatment plant, which is where the original name came from. According to Steve Hopkins, the DNR’s on point source coordinator, several water sources in the state of Iowa are known as sewer creek, because originally that’s exactly what they were used for. Now only treated water from the plant is discharged into the creek, and Wolken’s class thought the original name smelled. “I was hoping that it would go through, Sewer Creek doesn’t really sound like a fitting name for a body of water,” Wolken said. “We wanted something that had more of a positive take.” CREEK | 3A

Artists to hit the stage at the Maytag Bowl By Kayla Langmaid Newton Daily News A day-long music affair of Blues tunes is in order for next month. The 25th annual Bowlful of Blues is set for noon to 10 p.m. Sept. 3 at Maytag Park. Members of the South Skunk Blues Society have worked tirelessly for the last year to find unique artists who will rock the stage at the Fred Maytag Bowl. The society’s president Elaine Mattingly said members and volunteers know what’s required each year, and

they began working on this year’s event directly following 2016’s Bowlful of Blues. “Our first step was to put together a list of things we wanted to improve on and what went well and what didn’t,” Mattingly said. “There were changes and tweaks made, and then the next step was scouting out new Blues acts we would like to consider to book.” Mattingly said members of the society as well as volunteers toured Blues-inspired bands in the state of Iowa as well as nationwide. “They will come back with

their experiences for us and the first piece is locking in our line up, which animates the rest of our planning,” Mattingly said. Going forward, Mattingly said the rest of the work is a lot of communication and staying in touch with the bands. Mattingly said bands, as well as attendees, will be traveling to Newton nationwide. One band performing is Dwayne Dopsie and the Zydeco Hellraisers from Lousiana. BLUES | 3A

The series, which features portraits of Frankenstein, the bride of Frankenstein, Wolfman, and Dracula is a love letter from Jackson to her favorite horror movies. As she looked at pictures of the horror legends she reimagined them as millennials. The Wolfman sports a smart looking pair of glasses, gauge piercings in his ears with a full moon design, a

sculpted beard and to top off the look, a man bun. Dracula sits in a movie theatre, a pair of 3-D glasses perched on his head. At her sister-in-law’s urging, she decided to enter the art contest at the Iowa State Fair this year, and when her entries were accepted, she couldn’t believe it. “I’ve dabbled in artwork forever, but I never thought I could do it for a career,” Jackson said.
