for them and a great lifestyle amid building experiences with livestock, various projects and photography,” Maher said. Maher is currently a 39 year member of the fairboard where he has sat as president and vice president. He also is a sheep superintendent. “I like meeting people and working with the kids,” Maher said. “They come up and talk to me and remember me each year.” Maher said he was surprised when he found out at the Jasper County Fair that he would an inductee. “I would really like to thank those who nominated me,” Maher said.
Colfax native Joe Otto has been named the new executive director of the Jasper County Historical Museum. The museum made the announcement through a fun, movie-trailer style video on the museum’s Facebook page on Saturday. Otto is best known around the county for his current efforts to relocate Red Bridge from its original location on the South Skunk River near Reasnor to Quarry Springs Park in Colfax. From visitOtto ing with local organizations and working with the Jasper County Supervisors to recreate the bridge on a float for the Jasper County Fair parade, Otto has been out in the public championing his efforts. He received his bachelor’s degree from Iowa State University and master’s degree in history from Appalachian State University. Currently, he is working on his Doctor of Philosophy in history from the University of Oklahoma. “My dissertation expands the scope of my thesis to cover the history of land reclamation, agriculture, and natural resource management in the state of Iowa in the late 19th and early 20th centuries,” Otto said. “It includes data gathered from state, local and federal archives, as well as cartographic and GIS sources.” Otto will be taking over for retiring director Ken Barthelman. Newton graduate Barthelman served at the museum since 2014 and cited heath related reasons for stepping down The museum displays exhibits relating to the industrial, agricultural and commercial and societal efforts of those living in Newton and in the county in the 1900’s, including a large display of Maytag washer and dryers.

Local fair leader inducted into 4-H Hall of Fame By Kayla Langmaid Newton Daily News
A local man was honored at the Iowa State Fair Sunday for the work he has done in the Jasper County 4-H program for more than 45 years. In front of family and friends, Robert Maher, 76, was inducted into Iowa’s 4-H Hall of Fame following a 4-H career that began in 1972. The experience was one that Maher said was both surprising and honoring as he awaited to take the stage Sunday afternoon. Maher was among more than 50 other inductees across the state of Iowa who were honored at the 4-H Hall of Fame ceremony. Over the years, Maher has played many roles, including, a parent, grandparent, leader, superintendent
and a fair board member. Maher and his father-in-law Loren Wing began the Poweshiek Pals 4-H club in the 50s. The club grew to be one of the largest clubs in Jasper County. Maher encouraged each of his 4-H members to be the best that they could be. The club went on yearly field trips and Maher’s goal was to educate each member but also have fun, too. “They had skating, sledding, club tours and amusement parks, but the best part was the Jasper County Fair,” Maher said. Maher said although he is no longer a club leader, he has gotten to see his four children and four grandchildren grow up involved in the Jasper County 4-H program. “I think 4-H is very educational
