Newton athletes will have the chance to compete in a national meet in Minnesota By David Dolmage Newton Daily News Newton High School’s cross country teams will be headed in a new direction, thanks to the Newton Community School District Board of Education. During the board’s regular Monday meeting board members approved a field trip request to allow the varsity members of the boys and girls cross country teams to travel to Minnesota to compete in the Roy Griak Invitational, to be held Sept. 22-23. The Griak Invitational, held at Les Bolstad Golf Course in Falcon Heights, Minn., is one of the largest cross country meets in the country, including six collegiate races and four high school races. Named after legendary coach Roy Griak, who served as the head coach of the Minnesota men’s cross country team from 1963-1996 and led the Gophers to three Big Ten

Thanks to a federal program, one Newton Elementary school will receive funding to provide extra snacks for students during the day. Christy Croson, food service supervisor for the Newton Community School District reported to the board that her application for the 20172018 USDA Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program had been accepted for Emerson Hough Elementary during Monday night’s regular board meeting. The program, which

is designed to provide children in participating schools with a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables is aimed at combating hunger while providing healthy options for students. Croson sent in applications for all four of Newton’s elementary schools, but only Emerson Hough received funding. Croson said due to budget constraints in the program only schools with more than 60 percent of students receiving free or reduced price lunches were eligible. According to Croson, more than 70 percent of students at Emerson Hough received free or reduced price lunches last year. At the remaining three elementary schools in the district, Thomas Jefferson, Aurora Heights and Woodrow Wilson only half of student population currently receives free or reduced price lunches. An unusual scene played out on Sunday evening in downtown Newton as the Newton Fire Department worked to assist an injured individual on a rooftop. The NFD ladder truck was brought in to hoist the individual, who had been secured to a stretcher, from the rooftop to street level where medical attention was then given. Newton Fire Chief

Jarrod Wellik said because of the type of injury and location, the ladder truck was the easiest way to move the individual. Another option would have been to use a giant slide but the ladder truck was deemed preferable. The individual involved, the type of injury and the status of the hurt individual as well as the specific location of the incident were all unavailable due to HIPAA regulations.

Summer Blackout Party Conservation, NPL to host eclipse viewing party By Kayla Langmaid Newton Daily News A summer viewing party is in order for the Great American Eclipse. The Jasper County Conservation along with the Newton Public Library will host a free Summer Blackout Party at Ashton Wildwood Park. No registration is required to attend from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cantu Aug. 21. The event will begin with a short program by conservation naturalist Katie Cantu. Cantu initiated the idea of the viewing party following several public programs with the Des

Moines Astronomical Society at the observatory. Some members of the society will be driving to see the eclipse in totality, and that’s when Cantu decided to make a local viewing event. “The moon is going to start moving at 11:45 a.m. and by 1:08 p.m. is when we will have 95 percent of the sun covered,” Cantu said. “We want people to arrive early and get situated.” There will be multiple security guidelines that attendees must follow, including wearing solar glasses, provided for free. “We have already had a lot of people call in to ask about the glasses,” Cantu said. “It’s just an exciting thing.” Cantu said some people may have taken off work and some people may just be stopping by for some of the viewing party, but she wanted to have an event that would be close to home for the community.
